squeaky belt + cold engine: Normal or Trouble?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I have noticed in the last couple weeks that what i think is the belt makes a squeaky noise after a cold start. The noise continues for a few minutes and eventually goes away once the engine is warm. is this normal behavior in cold behavior or should i have my car checked? thanks!

Not normal. Belts should never squeak or squeal.

I have no direct experience with belt issues on the M2, but have on other cars. The belt is either too lose (most likely) or too tight. It could be that the tensioner is loose causing the belt to slip. It could also be that the belt is wearing oddly (since the car sits outside) and therefore is causing noise. I'm betting it's the belt tension though.

It doesn't necessarily mean trouble, nor is anything major or catastrophic. I would check the belts for wear, check for tension (not too tight, not too loose), and check the pulleys to see of they are wobbling or making noise. If a bearing is bad in a pulley or 2, then that could also cause the noise.

In my other car, my belt noise was caused by worn idler pulleys, and a worn tensioner. Simply replaced both, along with the belt, and it's been silent for 2 years now. Granted, that car is 13 years old with 140k miles on it.

If the car is under warranty, and you don't feel like dealing with it yourself, just take it in. They should be able to get it sorted pretty quickly.

Have you had a look at the belts with a torch with the engine running?

Could be wet / oily / salt contamination , maybe even a rodent got chewed up in the belt area.

Our neighbours had a cat minced round the belts in his Audi A4, real mess. it was the belts squeaking that alerted him to that.

Animals like warm engine bays in winter!

if you're not sure, take it to the dealer

FYI On the M2C the belt tensioners are self adjusting from what I know.

Hi, new owner of a M2 Comp here, with just over 10 days and 300 miles. When I started up my car today, I could hear this same squeaking for about 10 seconds after starting up. Didn't manage to record it, but it sounds a lot like what you described!

When I started mine up the air was about 55 degrees in 97% humidity.

Did you take it in to the dealer? Was it resolved?

I haven't yet because i haven't heard the squeaking noise for the last couple week.s It has been pretty warm. I'll wait till it gets cold before i can take it to the dealership. they will probably have to keep the car overnight in order to reproduce the noise.

Following up here in case any one else runs into this.
I started hearing this squeaking sound on the *first* cold starts every morning. The frequency of the the squeaking changed with the engine revs.
I took it into the dealer, and they had it in the shop for about 4 working days and tracked it down to the harmonic balancer. The parts are on back order.

Thanks for the heads up. I have a very early M2 comp, only has about 5k miles but I’ve noticed when I start it up after it’s been sitting I get some pretty significant squeaking. I have to take it to the dealership for an oil change shortly, I will have them take a look.

Thanks for this. I have actually taken my car to the dealership for this very issue. They said they couldn't find anything wrong. They said there may have been some moisture on the belt, which causes the squeaking. For me the issue only lasts no more than 15-20 seconds. I didn't buy their reasoning so it was good to see your experience.

I had a slight squeal for a couple of months which disappeared after it was warmed up. It got really noticeable so I took mine in this week to get looked at.

First diagnosis was that the tensioner pulley and alternator belt needed replacing, which they did.

I collected my car last night and the new belt lasted less than 5 miles before it completely shredded and had to do a U-Turn back to the dealership.

Update this morning is that one or more of the pulleys has seized and needs replacing.

2019 M2C, 3500 miles ☹️
