Weird noise coming from engine bay

It's around 4c here but had this noise on start up and was still having the same noise after a 5-10min drive.

Miles: 44500

Any guesses?

Garage List
Sounds external to the engine, almost like a rattling heat shield

That’s no heat shield rattle. That’s either the death rattle or maybe belt tensioner flapping around. No matter what that’s not a go drive me sound.

I've got fully comprehensive extended warranty on the car so going to take it to main dealership. I hope it can be driven another 10 - 50 miles (depending on dealership availability).

Hoping I can get this resolved soon.

The sound before it goes boom, and locks up.

He’s probably referring to rod knock. This sounds bad but I’m not sure it’s rod knock.

I thought the 'death rattle' was when the turbo WG was about to blow apart? Or when VANOS gets way out of whack?

where is it coming from exactly? I am with whoever says it sounds external like something is rattling against something else. But without really getting in there it will be impossible to know. You have the warranty so definitely take it in. Do come back here and let us know what it was

Sounds like it is coming from outside the engine, near the alternator - perhaps the belt? It is booked in next week. Will keep everyone posted.

Also worth mentioning that I do not have any engine warning lights.

yeah it could also be tensioner pulley which is next to the alternator.

Forgot to update - the culprit was the tension pulley. They replaced that, the alternator and belt. Warranty covered most of the costs, I just paid for the belt and excess.
