Considering selling my 2018 M2 LBB 6MT

I bought my AMG Edition 1 C63S sedan new about 3 years ago. I had wanted an F80 M3, but I just don't like that S55. I sold my E90 M3 6MT for the AMG, and I had an F10 M5 DCT before it, so I have been comfortable with BMW for a while. It took me a while to appreciate the AMG. I still much prefer driving a manual transmission, and this car didn't tick that box. However, once mainly I got over not using a third pedal, I began to appreciate the car for what it is - an amazing beautiful looking and sounding monster. The leather still smells like a box of Crayola, and the acceleration brings a smile to my face with every drive. I actually like this car more than I liked my M3, which is saying a lot!

I picked up my M2 as a fun car in which I can occasionally go to HPDE days. I didn't initially fall in love with the car, but after I make some minor changes to it, I found the sweet spot. Having a coupe while having two kids is a pain, but it's a pain that we have been willing to endure. So why consider selling one of these two magnificent cars?

My daughter is ready to start driving. I have two choices for her to learn - the 600bhp (it's tuned) AMG or the 400bhp (also modified) M2 6MT. Neither are reasonable choices in which to teach a teenager to drive. After some exhaustive research on safety features and after a test drive, I decided on getting her a Kia Soul GT Turbo. One of my cars now has to go. The AMG is a stunning car, which makes me feel like I've "made it" when I'm behind the wheel, but it's not a car I would take to the track. However, I have tracked my M2 a couple of times, because the car is basically made for that type of driving. Selling the AMG is selling exclusivity and extreme comfort, but basically just a daily driver. Selling the M2 is selling a more pure driving experience, at the expense of it being much more a common car.

I'll be back in the game, once both of my kids get older. Maybe I'll shoot for a Porsche in the future; maybe something more unique. For now, though, I have to be a responsible parent and give up an upper echelon German sports car for a Korean econo-box. This is a bitter pill to swallow, but one of my cars has to be sold. What are your thoughts?

Personally I would get rid of the M2, if you can only have one car (so DD and fun car) and I had kids, I think a C63s would be a great choice. But that's just me. However on the other hand, if I specifically had to choose between my daily driver (GTI) and the M2 it would be the M2 all day long. I think it being a C63s makes the blow of losing the M2 a little more bearable...

But man what a tough decision it must be, this thread makes me sad. Can't you just make her park on the curb and keep both? Lol.

I can keep both, but it just doesn't make sense to do so. We are doing this, so my kid can learn to drive; she is only 15 at the moment. If we sell the Merc, we my wife and I will also use this car as a daily driver for one of us. In a way, Merc (4 door) and Kia (4 door) is about the same to us. We will still get to keep the "driver's car" M2. Selling the M2 gets us two kid carriers. Kind of a buzzkill.

The C63S is a special edition (Edition 1 was a $14k package made available only for first year Mercedes), so it's rare and should get us a reasonable amount of equity back. Selling the M2 now, with the M2C out now, won't bring much back in value. I think the right thing is to sell the AMG, but shit, it's the nicest car I've ever owned or even ridden in.

All first world problems, of which I am completely aware. But as members of a car enthusiast forum, it's a problem I felt the need to vent.

Honestly, as your daughter gets older, she is going to want/use the Kia more and more. Unless you and your wife don't need immediate access to a car at all times, I really would keep both the Merc the M2.

If you really want to sell one, I agree with selling the AMG based on your rationale...but my rationale would be that I need a MT!!

In my area AMG Mercedes are everywhere. The M2 is a much rarer car. Use the KIA as a daily kid car and save the M2 for fun. Mercedes are are even found as Car to Go cars (car share cars).

Get your kid a 2010 civic/corolla and keep both cars, shes probably going to run it into something anyway.

I hate to say it but I would get rid of the fun car...because it's just for fun. Things change and you can get a fun car again later.

My first option would have been to just teach the daughter to drive the m2. It can be done. It defaults to comfort mode and it has rev matching and hill assist. I bet the m2 is one of the easier cars to learn stick on.

This is what I did for all of my kids' cars. A nice used, fully depreciated Civic (etc.) is a great first car!

I don't know much about Mercs, but it sounds like a shame to give up something that's rare. I would sell the M2 as it's a dime a dozen and easily replaced in the future or do as others have already mentioned and just get a civic. I feel like you can lease a civic for under $200...that's like gas for a month.

Ah I see, okay in that case if you are planning on using the Kia as well then I'd say keep the M2 instead!

I've found that with hobbies in particular, rational decisions can often lead to regrets and disappointment much more often than going with your heart or gut feelings (financial decisions notwithstanding hah). My GTI was a very rational decision- but in hindsight I'd have been happier with another Mustang or a used corvette or something.

Totally agree. 15h a week can pay $230 lease payment. Perhaps you can offer to pay insurance on her car if she pays the car payment?

Keep the AMG and the M2. Very different personalities.

You've made it. Now it's the kids turn to learn the kind of work it takes.

Teach her to drive the M2 in comfort mode. You will be doing her a favor. She'll learn how to control a car and she'll be able to drive a stick for the rest if her life. It's really not that difficult.

Our daughter will be 14 in July... Still early, but still getting close to that age. So I can see where you are coming from in a way...

However, I agree with others who say just get your daughter a cheap starter car. One you don't have to share. As she proves herself responsible and reliable, then let her upgrade in a couple years (a job to help with expenses is a great idea!).

So much this! My parents never sacrificed their stuff for me, I had to go out and work for what I wanted. Driving isn’t a right, it’s a privilege as I so fondly remember hearing. Made me appreciate things a hell of a lot more than if it was just handed to me.

I kind of get the hint that this isn't a money thing lol . Get a cheap car, keep both your cars. I would never sacrifice my M2 (or my C63 if I had one) for another vehicle, I will just add a cheaper car to the fleet.

I don't quite understand why one of your cars would have to go. Space issues can be solved, money doesn't seem to be a problem for you.

Sell the M2

Get your daughter a VW Golf.

My son learned how to drive with my 06 gti 6 speed manual.

Do your self a favor and test drive a golf.

My pockets not deep enough to swing expensive college tuition and a 4th car.

The merc is special; keep it!
