Why surprising?

340i AWD automatic. M2C RWD manual.

Logically the drag race will always be favorable for the AWD, even more so with launch control. In the rolling race the M2C is faster

Given that the M340xi was on a wet track and the M2C was on a dry track, I would have expected the M2C to be faster.

Yeah not an apples to apples comparison but still interesting to watch. My wife swears her 340xi will beat my stage 2 m235i rwd. i guess there's only one way to find out!

I thought the M2C would have pulled away much harder in the roll race.

Cars are performing so similar these days it's seemingly all about smiles per hour (at least personally), and M2(c) both have those in SPADES.

to me its kind of surprising because its a 4d commuter car rolling up against a legit M car.
very impressive 340 and its all good news tbh. Good for bmw putting out a nice awd soccer mom car that really fly in a straight line

The whole point of a "legit M car" is not to win drags. Put those cars on a road course, then see where they stand.

Many cars are fast off of the line these days including SUVs. It doesn't mean that they are a joy to drive on a windy mountain road or on the track. The overall "fun factor" wins it for me... enter M2/M2C.

I just watched a video review of the new 340i taken at the LA Autoshow. Regardless of performance, I can't say that I am very excited about the design. It is getting a bit too Optima (ish).

Not sure what the 340ix has to do with the Z4. The comparison from the OP was between the M2C and the 340xi. And I'm confident that the track would reveal a much larger difference between those two than a drag would.

I am very curious as to what this new M340I can put down at the 1/4 mile. The M2C is putting down 116 MPH at the 1/4 mile and if this ties it at the 1/4 mile it could possibly put down the same numbers which would be pretty amazing for a M340i

I have yet to encounter a windy mountain road (flat corn field Ohio), or a track. I’m doing a disservice to my M4 ...
