Thinking about trading my E90 M3 for a M2

Hey guys,

I figure it would be best to ask this community, but would it be crazy to trade my e90 m3 for an M2? I've had every m3 to this date and have always been interested in the m2 after selling my e46.

I'm more so looking at the OG m2 as I've already owned an F80 with the s55 motor.

Not crazy. The M2 is about the same size as an E46 M3 but has more hp. If you remember when the first reviews came out on the M2 reviewers said that it really should be called an M3. It is the size and hp that an M3 should have been.

Coincidentally I crossed shopped an e90 m3 with my m2…

Two entirely different vehicles with entirely different characteristics. So it depends on your use case and want you prefer in a car.

Because I would be often driving around the city, I ended up opting for the M2. I'd have very little opportunity to rev out that awesome V8. I thought the M2 was more fun at lower speeds given it's torque, and much more tossable than the e90.

I prefer the e90 interior and thought the build quality was better, but in the end went for the car that was more fun for me to drive.

Good luck to you!

Keep the m3… s65 will go down as one of most special engines.

Given you've had the s55 in the f80, I would say that you should look at the M2 comp and not the OG.

I've got an OG and I'm looking at getting an E92! I just want to own a v8 with manual as they are pretty much non-existent now.

This was my thought process as well. I loved driving my E46,

The reason why I'm not a fan of the comp M2 is that the s55 sounds horrible. The F80 was hella fast, but i sold it in 6 months because it was boring in my mind. The e90 m3 is a monster when revving it out to 8k and there is nothing like it. However, i figured a n55 in a car as small as the m2 would be just enough power to have fun.

Very logical, I actually just replaced my e92 m3 that was totaled with an 18 M2. I love it, stock for stock the chassis/suspension feels much better than the e9x, and the engine is more usable on street.

That said I'll add an e9x again in the future, I love them. My actual plan was to get a lift, keep the m3 nice, and add a higher mile m2 as a daily.

TL;DR, the m2 is a better chassis than the m3 I think. I had a good bit done to get my e92 tight (kw clubsport, solid subframe/diff, spl arms). Weirdly with all that done, a stock m2 still feels "lighter" and eager to change direction

I have seen opinions going both ways for this situation. I've seen several E9x M3 guys come over to the M2 and say they love it due to the nimbleness of the car and (relatively) better MPG and daily drive setup. I've also seen an equal amount of people who said they got into the M2 and missed the intoxicating sound and feel of the E9x chassis and S65. It really depends on what you want in car, to be honest. For me, the M2 is a no-brainer as it's my DD and DD'ing the M3 seemed unappealing.

M2 is more fun to drive around the city. e90 sounds great when you can wind it out and the steering feel is very nice. M2 has a more practical and exploitable motor. The difference in low end torque is night and day - there is something to be said about that. e90 is more manageable - the M2 is a little bit more of a handful in comparison.

This is all excellent information guys. However, this is really a tough decision for me to make. I'm leaning toward trying to keep the m3 and try and pick up a high milage M2 to enjoy as a daily because I don't think anything is betting the sound of an e90.

I have an OG m2. Loved it from day one. Didn't actually drive, but went for a ride in an E90 m3. Was actually quite disappointed after being in my car. And that was before bolt ons and tune. 🤷*♂️ just my 0.2

Had a similar experience getting to drive a friends E92 M3 with a tune and full exhaust. It made sounds that made me laugh out loud and brought great joy, but felt everything else about my M2 was superior.

My car makes more power everywhere, I think it looks better, it’s just… better.

This is a good idea IMO. I own both and refuse to get rid of one or the other. If I had to pick, the E92 M3 stays because I have more history with it.

As I mentioned in another thread, for the E9x M3, the engine response, steering and of course sound.

For me, I only considered the M2C because I like the engine better, but highlights are size, fun personality and torque.

You can see here they actually sit side by side very well.

I agree i was looking at possibly just cashing in for a 718 gt4, but at the end of the day, I feel that the m2 is underrated in every aspect. However, the e90 is a blast all by itself. I think these responses have 100% helped me make my decision. Now its time to look for a high milage m2 ...lol

Just get a 335i E9X. The steering feel of the E9x and the power and low-end torque of the M2. lol done. Tune and simple mods and your at 400hp.

Having a naturally aspirated manual V8 and a DCT M2 in your garage is a fantastic combo. Really different experiences. Both wonderful and neither is better than the other. Just depends on your mood.

Depends on what you want. I have both.

The obvious difference is the e90 sounds better and the motor is better the harder you drive it, has some steering feel, it's more practical with 4 doors, it feels larger and heavier, I feel like I'm sitting up front, throttle is noticably sharper than m2.

The m2 feels more nimble, notably more torque, whips around town corners better, it likes to dance, I feel like the car rotates around me, less wind buffeting, DCT a bit snappier, tech better, lower quality interior, engine gets worse the harder you push it between tiny turbo and heat soak, perhaps more reliable?

If I had to give up one to get a gt3 I'm not sure which I would sell. I thought the e90, trade high revving NA for similar, but now I think I'd give up the m2? The practically and uniqueness of high revving 4 door V8 is hard to beat.

The e90 is like a great steak, the m2 is like pizza. I find the noise the e90 makes with CF plenum and exhaust endlessly entertaining, and the m2 kind of just feels like the right size to me.

That blue on your E90 is incredible. Beautiful setup sir.

It’s worth mentioning here that comparing a FBO “stage 2” N55 M2 to an E9X M3 is a lot different than a stock OG M2.

In other words, I hope your ‘Pizza’ has a lil extra spice on it
