We have sold, installed and maintain lots of AP/Essex big brake kits. We have not seen or heard of any extreme pad taper wear nor accelerated wear. Definitely reach out to AP/Essex for help.

Race compound pads will eat rotors alive when cold and often use as a tool to clean up the rotors of uneven pad deposits. It's like having a built-in lathe. A street compound should be used on the street.

This issue is present on both front wheels. About a year later I had some suspension work done at my performance shop, and had them buy new discs and re-install the brake kit, but the issue is still there. They reached out to AP, but they have yet to offer any suggestions as to what might be causing the issue. My shop has installed over 100 of these kits on various platforms and has never seen the issue. Has anyone encountered this problem, or have any idea what could be causing it? Thanks.
Did you get this resolved? What was the problem?

Nobody seems to be able to offer a reason for this. I can only imagine I would get more disc life if the wear was spread more evenly between the outer/inner face. My shop worked with your office. I will get the info and PM you. We were thinking about removing them in Jan. And returning them for evaluation. I do not see any pad taper issue, just the uneven wear. Thanks
Bump. Checking in on this. Hoping you/Essex figured something out!

I’d be interested to hear what’s going on here too! I’ve seen accelerated wear on my rotors (but evenly on both faces) presumably because I’ve run DS3.12 pads for 12k miles on street and track.
My inner pads are wearing a little more though, but I didn’t take my dust shield off which definitely won’t help. I also run with MDM traction control on because it’s my daily driver and I’ll sacrifice a couple tenths and $$$ a year if it means I get safely bailed out of sketchy situations I put myself in!
That said the 3.12s are expensive pads to “waste” on the street so I finally worked up to changing them out to my DS2500s for the winter.

Did you do the AP rears too? I have a set of rear DS2500 for sale if so.

Thanks, but I’m still running the stock rear callipers.
In fact, I’d purchased a set of CarboTech 1521s for the fronts (CTCP3558D54-1521), but they have the pad retention loop on the front and I don’t have the tools to get rid of it here in my small apartment 😄

I’ve had the CP9668/CP9449 setup w/pad anti-rattle clips on my f82 M4 with PFC 11 race pads & CT 1521 street pads. Very minimal pad taper on the F and R.

It’s surprising to hear people are seeing/concerned about accelerated wear on brake pads and rotors when using race pads on the street. You’ll never get race pads up to their sustained operating temp on the street and, consequently, you’ve got race pads acting like a brake lathe on your rotors. It’s not the Essex/AP calipers and j-hook rotors causing the accelerated wear.

Order the CT 7790A pad shape (available in different thicknesses) and it comes without the pad retention tab. Fits the CP9668 (25 mm pad) and CP9660 (18 mm pad) calipers.

A cheap $15 harbor freight angle grinder will fix that for you

Where in the Bay Area are you?

I ordered the 7790A from speedfreaksusa, but they were told by CarboTech that that shape was superseded by CTCP3558D54, which I decided to go for, as it seemed fine by me. Imagine my surprise when they came with the little loop!

It’s the lack of skill and space rather than the cost hah! I’m in Mountain View.

Interesting. In 2018 I worked with Mike (owner) to improve the backing plate geometry and pad material placement on the backing plate specifically for the 25 mm-thick pad. I’m using their 1521 street compound (PFC 11 for the track) so it’ll take a while to wear thru a set of street pads. Surprised to hear they’ve superseded it with the AP Racing pad number which has the retainer tab as part of the backing plate (vs. the PFC 7790 pad number which does not have the retainer tab). I suppose we’ll have to request they remove the pad retainer tabs before shipping out the pads.

Ah, I'm about 35min away, but if you were closer I'd say to come on over and I'd do it for you. I'm sure you can bring it to any auto shop, ask nicely and give them a $20 and they'll do it too. Heck, might even see if they'd be willing to cut them off for just asking nicely.
