Just got 255/285 RE-71RS thrown on. I just couldn't get my Michelins to quit chunking even after camber plates. Excited to see how these will perform on the track

Fresh meats arrived for coming track weekend. It will be mounted on m2c with staggered 19" wheels. Front 255/35/19 and rear 285/35/19.
I've only tracked one set of oem Michelin PSS and 4 sets of Goodyear Supercar 3. Will see how much difference on track.

Yeah idk when that'll happen. i still have plenty of life on my Cup2's and pretty busy with work so trackdays will come at a premium this last quarter of the year....I was hoping to go back up to Laguna in October but I don't think I can swing that.

Mine are still stacked in the garage. Will likely end up on my 2nd set of wheels soon, which are street only. Will have to finish off my current set of Cup2's before I get another set of 71RS' for the track set of FI-R's...

Just some quick thoughts while I’m driving to the track. Please excuse any Siri translations. Very responsive surprisingly more comfortable than I thought they would be but obviously not quite as comfortable as the 4S definitely louder than I would want for a road trip tire but much quieter than the previous 71R.

Alright, quick track review. In short, probably the best all-around track tire (of many many) I've been on.

Pros
Arrive & drive
Excellent grip. Definitely more grip than a Toyo RR, similar to an A052.
Quick warm-up, can easily go faster than most of the other cars/tires on track in the first few laps without pushing hard. By lap 3, they're pretty much ready to nail it.
The drivability and feel is sooo good. Literally nothing I didn't like about how the tire drives--braking, steering, acceleration.
Throttle steering was so easy and controllable--loved it.
Much quieter on the way home than the old 71R after a couple track days.
Durability seems a little better than the old 71R, but I only have two days on them. Will know better later.
Comfortable to drive on.
Supposedly good in the wet, didn't get to try it.
EDIT: I did three skid pad sessions and they had so much wet grip we couldn’t get the car to under/oversteer at slow speed. I was in the top of 2nd/into 3rd just to have enough speed to make the magic happen. Was flying around that skid pad!

Cons
A bit too loud for summer non-track driving.
They definitely absorb heat much quicker than something like a Toyo RR. I went from 27-38psi on my front outside and 27-35psi on front inside in 12-15min. Rears were fine.
The upshot is they don't get greasy and slick like the old 71R, but rather gradually lose their grip with psi that high.

Def my new fav tire, and being able to arrive & drive and not have to switch tires if it rains is a big plus. Setting a new PB on Summit Main (1:21:4) was icing on the cake. Non-traffic optimal had me well into the 1:20s.

I found 33-34psi was the sweet spot on my setup, so I either need to think about removing TPMS from my track wheelset so I can drop starting pressures to ~25psi, or address the heat issue by adding rear AP's to go with my front AP's or add a daily drivable friendly brake cooling setup that I can run on track.

My front left outside tire was getting up to 220F even after I hit the hot pits to drop pressures, and I wasn't overdriving it--just the tire absorbing more heat than I'd like from my brakes and being on the outside.

Very cool. My current sent is still sitting in the garage but they're going on my street wheels, so I'll need a set when I'm done with my current Cup2's to compare....

I agreed all he said, another m2c on track at same weekend same track with same tires.

One more thing I would like to add: I was really pushing on the tires for 30mins session (to manage some cup cars and a McLaren), the old version overheat issue seems got improved. I felt like I still had about 80% of grip in the end of session.

Quick questions for those of you who have tracked them:
  • What hot pressures were you running?
  • Can you compare to RT660s?

I have 275/35-18s going on tomorrow morning and my car is 3700lbs with driver and full fuel. I'm thinking 34-35psi hot, but I never ran the previous RE71R for comparison.

33-34psi was the window for me. Seemed like above 35 started to lose a little grip.

I realize you posted the pressures in your post above, but thanks for reiterating for me. I'll aim for 34 hot. Couple other questions, what are you running for camber and what kind of front wear have you seen so far?

Well, one of my Cup2 tires delaminated at the track today. I didn't want to waste the rest of the afternoon, so I decided to take my "street" FI-R's which had the 71RS' mounted to them.

I gotta say, that grip felt substantially better than the Cup2s. Maybe I'm used to the Cup2's after all these months running them at the track, but turn-in was crisp and gripped for dear life. My buddy was in the car with me that only session and he felt how immense the grip was on tip in and just holding throughout the session. Fantastic tire that I set at 30psi cold and I'm not sure where it stood after a handful of laps, but that was solid
