Snapped Rear Spring

Anyone?

Apparently someone has managed it with the stock suspension.

I first thought wtf how is that possible however a quick search shows it is sorta common. Some suggest high salt environment can contribute to it also.

It's common on corroded springs (particularly 3-series rear springs), but...

Sometimes parts fail, without background its hard to tell why. Maybe a manufacturing defect, maybe the guy took the spring it off the car and left it subermerged in a bucket of sea water for the last three years.

Snapped rear sprung today

Either replace it or upgrade suspension?

Garage List
This was common on Z4M's.. and was def salt-related. Springs weren't adequately coated.

I guess daily driving in the northeast doesn’t help, but seems kind of rediculous at 52k miles on a car that’s just over 3 years old

Wow, still shouldn't happen. My Mazda 3 has been driven 12 years through salt and I never wash it, and the springs haven't failed.

I did it today. Hit a small bump and heard a crash and bottoming out. Weird squeal sound at low speeds. Jacked it up and the spring was broken in 3 pieces.

Just happened to my M2C.I backed the car out of the garage. Just walking back to the house with the car parked behind me, heard a bang like a gate slamming. Rear drivers side dropped, wheel up in the arch. Car being recovered this morning, not drivable.
Bloody odd…
Glad I wasn’t moving at the time. Can’t get under the car to see the spring.

Hopefully the parts are available, or the car isn’t a daily driver, as the rear spring was 2 weeks out delivered from Germany.

WTF this is crazy. How common is this? It seems like a real safety issue and BMW should recall them. How many miles do you have?

20k, three years old. Waranty company arguing to just replace a single spring. Very unhappy with that idea, will get both done even if they refuse to pay for it. The spring basically completely dislocated and there was no support to the offside rear after it snapped. Wouldn’t have fancied being moving at the time. Car is completely stock.

Insurance and warranty companies will do whatever they can to not pay up. A part like this shouldn’t be breaking and bmw should do the right thing for the customer. I was at 52k miles, they wanted $700 for the labor for one spring!!! So over $1000 to replace 1 spring. Full coilover kit for $3700 installed. I’ve got a better riding car, with new suspension that has lifetime warranty.

If one spring breaks, when will the other break?

Yeah it's a little scary. What happens if these break at highway speeds?

This is a real safety issue. I'd definitely have filed a complaint with NHTSA. What coilovers did you go with and how do you like them on Jersey roads vs the OEM setup?

Tc Kline coilovers, they soak up the bumpy pot hole jersey roads better than the stock suspension. Although noisier the ride is great!

There's another one on M3 Cutters who may have popped a CV joint/damaged the differential as well after driving it without realising the rear springs had failed.

Maybe jetbill was on to something when he noted that the stock rear springs appeared to be variable rate.
