2018 BMW M2  [10.00]
Hey everyone! I just bought a 2018 M2 w/DCT last week and while I wait for it to ship to me I’ve been doing a bunch of research on mods and I would like some advice. I’m pretty familiar with the N54 platform as I used to own a 135i with catless downpipes, FMIC, LSD, and MHD S2. I absolutely adored that car and I was very happy with the power level I was at and didn’t feel the need to pursue further power gains. How will the N55 in the M2 feel, both stock and with comparable mods? Will it be about as fast as my 135i was? What sort of power gains can I expect with FBO + tune on the M2? I’m assuming the power gains won’t be as drastic as it was on my 135i because the M2 comes stock with 70hp more than my 135i did. Are the power gains from FBO and tune significant enough on the M2 running 91ACN to make the effort and money worth it? Or should I just leave the M2 stock and enjoy it for what it is? Any advice would be appreciated!

My FBO BM3 Stage 2 91acn M2 made 381whp/421wtq and feels great. On the stock tune with the parts installed it made 360whp/375wtq, so I would assume fully stock it would have made around 340-350whp/360wtq.

Only you can decide if it’s worth it to modify, imo the M2 is great as is and I only decided to modify as my plastic charge pipe broke… so I opted to replace a bit more than that. The added turbo whistle from the catless downpipe sounds awesome though and the torque is lovely

The gain is good but it’ll be as fast if not maybe a tad faster than a FBO N54 135. I upgraded to the OG M2 from a 135 as well. It’s when you hit the corners that the fun begins. Try it stock for now but I suspect you’ll mod it soon.

Same usual charge pipe, fmic and downpipe mods along with a tune

So I can expect the M2 to be as fast if not a little faster than my FBO MHD stage 2 135i after doing the same mods (DP, IC, tune)?

So I can expect a gain of ~40whp/50wtq from stock to FBO? That seems pretty good! Will probably get me to exactly where I want to be. I don’t really have any interest in going further than FMIC, DP, and tune

Depending on what fuel you have access to you could see more than that as well. You will definitely need a chargepipe as well!

I have dp, fmic, tune, chargepipe + turbo inlet, Gfb dv+ & AFE drop in filter.
I’ve purchased a CTS intake and DS15 hpfp over the winter so it may make a little more power this summer when I try It out dunno

Yes chargepipe definitely needed as well! Did you find the inlet worthwhile? I’ve been eyeing the Turbosmart BOV because I loved my HKS BOV in my 135i

I had everything installed at once so I can’t really comment on individual differences unfortunately. It was well recommended for max potential though so it’s a cheap thing to tack onto the bill vs. Wondering what if

I don’t believe the inlet will make a difference on stock turbo

Yes it will - it’s worth about 10hp peak on its own, not to mention a lower WGDC.

Why the rush. Drive your M2 stock for a few months and see how you like it. If you feel it is too slow then think about mods. My M2 is on stock tune and suspension. But it is still a hoot to drive and an excellent track car.

That’s what I WANT to do but then I think “well the stock chargepipe is prone to blowing up even at stock tune so I should get a chargepipe. If I’m getting the chargepipe I may as well do the FMIC at the same time and save on labor costs…. And if I’m getting the chargepipe and FMIC I may as well do the downpipes while I’m there too”. If it weren’t for the chargepipe situation I’d be a lot more happy with just leaving it stock 😅

The charge pipe isn't a very common problem. I personally don't know anyone who has changed theirs or blown the stock charge pipe without a tune. And there are lots of M2s in my area. Even the general manager of my local dealership owns two M2s. He hasn't brought it up as a problem.

Driving style and he likely play a part in this. As does having a warranty. Plenty of stories of blown chargepipes, no need to imply they don’t exist.

They are very rare on a stock tune.
