To gti, or not to gti?
Got a new job which isn’t wfh, meaning the 2-3k miles per year ive *been* putting on the m2 is about to change to 10-11k. My current mileage is 18k. Do i just get a gti to daily?
Edit: Just your basic ‘suburbs to downtown’ every day; 40 miles round trip on a terrible road network. No garage parking, but out in public areas that you probably wouldn’t want to park in overnight too many times. Edit: bought the gti, named it margot robbie.

I vote yes!
The GTI is a fun and capable little car, but you’ll have a new found appreciation for the M2 when you’re not using it as a daily. If you can spring for a second car, and have room for a weekend toy, do it! |

Why? 10K to 11K is still under the average mileage for a car. Enjoy your M2.
Don’t forget that if you get a second car you also have another registration and insurance to pay every year.

I think we'd need a little bit more information surrounding your situation (other cars, commute type, etc).
A lot of people on here had GTIs or still have them, they are great cars. I had a GTI that I loved but often found myself reaching for the M2 keys over the GTI. I think the M2 can easily be a daily and would have a hard time justifying a GTI for that sole purpose when the mileage isn't crazy like 20k a year or something. |

I generally daily my M2. My commute is 2-4 days/week, about 6 miles entirely through DC and the close-in suburbs. So not exactly a route where I get to wring it out or anything, but I still really enjoy getting to drive it often. I think it's a great car to drive every day - solid tech, firm but comfortable enough (I'm still on stock suspension), cozy in the cold with heated seats and steering wheel, and engaging even at sane city speeds. Essentially the only concession I've made to my situation is swapping to a set of winter wheels/tires (Pilot Alpins) so I'm safe in freezing temps.
Oh, and I also have a 4runner to drive if it's actually bad weather. My M2 doesn't go out in the snow/salt, both to keep the corrosion away and to account for people around here who don't know how to drive in slippery conditions. Otherwise I'm almost always taking the M2. My advice would be that, if you're willing to put the money into a second car, make it something that compliments, rather than competes with, the M2. Our 4runner serves an entirely different purpose for us (dog/trip/hauling stuff car), so I never feel like I'm making a choice between two similar experiences. Either way, drive your fantastic car and don't worry about the miles. Who are you saving them for anyway? |

I don't know why you would do this. It's a M2, not a LaFerrari. The car is designed to be driven every day (that's the whole appeal of M cars).
You would spend say $20k on a GTI + Insurance to save 10k miles a year on your M2? Your M2 is going to depreciate regardless. This would make sense if it were buying a GTI as a daily and then buying something more unique/interesting that will hold value to drive on weekends (like a GT4). But this decision makes little sense to me on something like a M2. If you're concerned about rust on your M2 that makes more sense to me. But I would just rinse the bottom of the car off every evening and save the 20k. |

Unless for some reason the added mileage would be much more difficult to handle in the M2 I would absolutely keep using it as a daily. That is one of the biggest positives of these cars - they can be absolutely great in a daily role and now you are lucky enough to be able to enjoy 4x more than you used to!

Daily my 2017. 6 track weekends a year. Agree with VR1 line for line. The appeal is it does it all so well.
We have a 4Runner for the household as well, so it’s not the only car in full-disclosure but even without it I’d be all about using the M2 as much as possible. There are lots of them. When this one gets tired, I’ll get one with low miles and start over again. |

I don’t daily my M2. I also park it for the winter. I love the car, it doesn’t have to be a hyper car or extremely rare for me to want to preserve it, for MYSELF.
I also have two motorcycles that are not ‘dailys’. One of them is worth quite a lot of money these days, when at the time they were a dime a dozen and maybe the most popular motorcycle on the market. Not a Ducati or a MV Augusta or something wild - it’s a 1994 CBR900RR (Fireblade). Try finding a nice example of one today. If it’s special to you and you want to keep it for a while, preserve it and take care of it. I daily an f150 and a ranger work truck. They’re not fun vehicles. The drives and the rides feel that much better knowing I’m not just accumulating crazy kms and [winter] wear cause ‘it’s not a special car’. All that said, I’ve driven a shit ton of VAG stuff, and the GTI is legit a fun little car. Just have to adjust expectations right? It won’t be anything close to the M2 experience, but for what it is, it’s great! People keep bringing up money. If you’re able to comfortably swing a second car, then who cares. I don’t think you’d be asking the question if you aren’t able to get a GTI. |

And to be clear, while I daily mine I'm still very invested in keeping it nice. For myself, not future resale or anything. I'm fortunate to have a garage on both ends of my commute and have the option to take a different car if I choose, or even just WFH. So maybe that's not a true "daily". If I was in your situation I might (and given your extra clarification probably would) do things differently. I'd just want my second car to have its own purpose outside of the commute, but that's just my approach. I used to have an E30 M3 back when they were $10k cars. It was my daily for several years. And then I decided I didn't want it to be anymore, so I bought a second car. I totally get where you're coming from. |

I voted yes - from experience.
I have a 2018 M2 and a MK7.5 GTI for daily driver/grocery getter. Compared to the M2, the GTI is not quite as fun to drive but has a smoother ride on terrible roads and better fuel mileage than M2. Thus a great daily driver. Plus it will save some wear and tear on your M2. I like your idea of: Gti: m-w M2: th-sun |

Drive the M2. Or get a 2004 Accord or similar for your driver and bank the rest for the next BMW purchase. It doesn't make a ton of sense to buy two new, depreciating assets as proposed. Unless you "can". Then go nuts...
