The size of the gas tank is in inverse proportion to the size of the trunk. If it were any bigger people would be complaining the trunk is too small.
These comparisons concerning fuel consumption are meaningless. Some people spend their lives in commuter traffic jams while others live in the country and are mainly driving on highways. I think that particular point is a lot more important than whether one drives in comfort or sport+, or how heavy one's right foot is, or whether one has forgotten to take the handbrake off !

The trunk is too small because I have to fill it with a goddamn spare tire because BMW decided it's perfectly fine to strand me on the side of the road and have me wait for a tow truck in the middle of the night to save 30 lbs.

I agree with the OP, it's not the fuel cost or MPG that bothers me, it's the range (size of the tank).

It's my understanding that in order to fit the M4 rear axle into the M2 they had to modify the floor plans & as such make the fuel tank smaller. I'm told the standard 2 series has a 60 litre tank. The M2 has a 50 litre tank & I miss that extra 10 litres #sportfucking

The 2 series tank is 52 litres. Same as the M2

This was a super annoying part of e9X M3 ownership. I didn't even make it. A week between fill ups.

It's not a money thing, it's just annoying. Plus it's a bit disheartening watching the fuel gauge drop in front of your eyes.

And seeing as you're on Maui, the damage to the wallet for gassing an M3 must have been awful. On a side note, I live and work in Lahaina about three months out of the year. BMW is not a good island car! I drive a Sonic while I'm here. Lil buggah made it to Haleakala and back on less than quarter tank of gas!

M235i gets 4 or 5 mpg more under the exact same conditions merely due to the shape of the car.

I've been running an e92 M3 in the UK for five years. That's fun at the pump!

Wait... what? The shape is the only difference between the M235i and M2?!?

I think it is the increased friction of all those covetous gazes as I drive by

Actually gas isn't that much more than SoCal. Getting Costco really helped.

The M3 was a lot of fun to drive up and down Haleakala.

A BMW is a great island car, as long as you have something else for the beach/hike/Costco/Peahi runs.

The worst part is the lack of many 93 octane gas stations near me. I almost have to plan ahead.

One of the reasons I got rid of the e92. Makes me wonder about the m2...

At 18 MPG I'll have to get gas roughly every 3.5 days. That's almost twice as often as I do in my e46. I'm OK with the gas budget but not being able to go a work week without refilling is pretty annoying.
The 50-50 weight balance would be upset with a larger fuel tank.
