Neither would be new. Id look to spend ~$20k on the gti.

This was literally my scenario until my brother needed a car. My 2004 Accord with the V6 and 6 speed was trusty and reliable, then it became my winter car when the M2 was added to the garage.

After my brother took ownership of the Honda, I felt I needed a second car for bad weather. It was reason enough to look into a GTI. Then the Integra Type S was announced along with the Corolla GR.

My thoughts are that if you're just looking for a car to beat on for the cold and snowy seasons, an older car is the way to go. If you're looking for something engaging to take the edge off while the M2 is garaged, look into the Type S, GTI, or Corolla GR (in that order).

Or put winter tires on the M2 and enjoy it all year round!

Yup. Comes out to about 10k miles a year. The economics of spending $20k to save $5-6k on depreciation doesn’t make sense to me in my case.

Had a MK7 GTI which I loved, but would (and do) still DD the M2.

And would a 20k GTI, plus insurance and maintenance really be cheaper than the resale hit of the extra miles on the M2?

I voted No ‼️

I’ve had to many issues with VW’s
It puts a real bad taste in your mouth.

I’d lease one, but I’d never buy one.

I have had a grand total of 8 GTI's over the years. The MK8 is by far the least fun of them all. I bought a 2023 40th anniversary last year to daily drive, and sold it in 3 months. FWD is no fun, and the constant electrical glitches were annoying. From travel assist errors, to random lights coming on, just do a google search. Then, in my infinite wisdom, I figured the 2024's should be fixed, because progress and because Golf R must be better.... yeah, not so much. Its a much better car to drive than the GTI but the problems are still there, and frankly, I don't trust VW to fix them nor do I get a warm and fuzzy feeling about long term ownership, so more than likely, I'll be getting rid of it soon and just driving the M2C. I'm not worried about putting miles on it or how much it'll be worth down the road as I own the car and at the end of the day, it's an entry level M car. I wanted to keep it "nice", which is why I bought both VW's, but am realizing that it's a fool's errand.

I appreciate everyone who offered their perspective.

I decided to go with the golf and do a 60/40 split. I think id be pretty upset if something happened to the m2 and our recent arctic blast reminded me how absolute shit driving is here in the winter.

I see why cars are named after women now; heres my mistress:

Given how fast you got the car it seems like you already knew you wanted it and were just looking for a little affirmation. Since you have it, congrats! I love the MK7 platform and it has a notably bigger aftermarket than the F87. Time to start modding it, haha.

I have a big turbo MK7R for a daily since 2018 and it’s been great. The gen 3 EA888 and MQB platform are hard to beat. The golf would dust my stage 2 N55 m2 haha

I was going to come and recommend F56 or F55 Minis with the B46 or B48 into the mix, but I see you've bought a nice GTI already!

Minis with the B46/B48 engine are so much more reliable than Mini in the past and from personal experience can make a LOT of power. My Cooper S went from 183whp to 300whp with minimal parts thrown at it.

That and the B46/48 engine is such a gem. Not too different from the B58.

I have too many cars with too many registrations and insurance payments.(2 trucks, a lifted jeep, wife's SUV, an Audi, GT4 and the m2) So take my advice with a pinch of caution. Get the gti for the daily. Keep the m2 for the funzies. Makes it more special that way, IMO

Agreed. I've had a few VW's over the years and I think the mk7 gen is probably the best of them all. Such incredible all-rounders and respond so well to tuning. I had a E85 tuned hybrid/big turbo mk7 R that I sold before picking up my M2C and like you said (at least straight line) would destroy my M2C. I really wanted to keep it but my wife would have killed me having a 4runner, the R and the M2C to all to myself.

murderspice congrats! Although I had an mk7 R vs a GTI I think it was a great move. I think you will really enjoy it and as others have mentioned the aftermarket is great and these mk7's respond so well to mods. As I mentioned above I really wish I could have kept my R but with a 4runner already there was no way I could justify keeping the R to. Living in Colorado I can relate to not wanting to put miles on the M2 during the crappy winter months. Anyway enjoy!
