Hi,

I figure many of you purchased a car from out of state before, it will be the first time for me.

The dealership is in NY and I am in TX.

The SA estimated that it would cost about $450.00 for state registration and in transit plate. It sounds too high for me, checking with you if this is reasonable?

He is also going to provide me a quote for the shipping cost. I have not shopped around, closed vs. open truck, etc. It seems to me that cars are being delivered to dealership across US in an open truck, so I am thinking it should be fine vs. having to spend more for closed truck. It is not an exotic car after all. What do you think and do you have recommendation on the shipping company to use?

I would absolutely go for a closed truck. You have no idea if the truck will be driving through dust storms, hail, rocks from construction, etc.

I've shipped cross country twice, and across the pacific 3 times. Every time, the car had a new scratch or small dent.

If possible, I'd recommend you just drive it.

Just picked mine up in NY too, and I'm in VA. I drove it back, but I would definitely get closed truck shipping. My charge for processing stuff was $400.

Did you file a claim with the shipping company?

I won't be able to drive it, beside, driving the car across the country has its risks as well.

Shipped from TX to IL, I'd recommend doing enclosed. The cost is worth the peace of mind. There are way too many elements with open transport. Plus, most enclosed carriers handle higher end cars and the drivers are much more careful. For example mine was in the same trailer with 2 Ferraris.

No, the damage was Bad enough that I would notice, but probably not bad enough to make a huge stink about, and I had no way to prove that they had done it.

I purchased my X6 from a dealer in Ohio and had it shipped to Texas. It was supposed to be a closed truck but ended up being open. No damage though. Shipping was $900. The only fees I paid were Texas registration, which isn't much, and Texas sales tax. Not sure what a "transit plate" is. No plate should be necessary unless you are driving it. Maybe they meant temporary plates that would be needed once you received it.

Anyway, I realize you passed on it but wanted to post in case it helps someone else.

Fees vary for most states based on where you take delivery so it isn't likely that you will get a solid answer. I would definitely ship enclosed. There are several guys here who have done that and can make recommendations.

Ship it with Intercity Lines, check for pricing on 6speed. However, you can do it open for half the price with another carrier. I had a car shipped from Wisconsin to NY open and it arrived in 3 days with no problems whatsoever. It was a $40k car, not a $200k Ferrari, after all.

What I don't get is how West coast BMW dealers get away with $10-$40k over MSRP when you can get one for MSRP with relatively low fees from hundreds of out of state BMW dealers?

I am buying out of state and driving it back. 850 mile drive is not so bad.
