Not like in your hand but not connected to anything. You can spin it around.
Pulled off the boot and nothing obvious.

The car now at the dealership.

Pissed!
The same thing just happened to my 2020 M2C. So bummed out right now! I've only had the car for 10 months and took it out of winter storage for its first spring drive and boom. Ugh!

The car is still under warranty... Would you recommend BMW fix it with OEM parts or pony up for an upgrade? If the latter which option would you choose and why?

Best get it fixed under warranty.

Usually you'll have to wake several weeks for upgrades like autosolutions short shifters are made to order.

UPDATE: BMW said that they found the shift rod was completely snapped/sheered off from the gear shift lever. The dealer asked $1024 to repair, stating that it looked like it was customer neglect. When I questioned this my rep said he petitioned BMW-NA. Approx. 24 hours later BMW indicated that they will cover the repair because they couldn't determine or say definitely that it wasn't due to manufacturer part failure.

The parts needed aren't in the US and have been shipped from Germany, so I'm still waiting for my M2C. They said I should have it back by the end of this week.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? I've babied this car and can't imagine how this would have happened.

Wow, your dealer sucks, glad BMW NA made it right. Customer neglect snaps the shift rod off at the weld? Come on...

Is it so hard to believe? The OP forgot to mention that he removed the gear boot and gear knob, extended the shift lever with a 2x4 and the additional leverage sheared the welds. No wonder they didn't wanna cover under warranty.

Blows me away they used the neglect card..

Good that BMWNA took care of it but I'd love to hear what they claim was neglected. I want to know what customer requirements there are (particularly in regard to maintaining welds) for a car that is still within both the warranty and maintenance period.

I finally was able to pick up my M2C. While at the dealership I asked about the warranty, the welds, etc... They told me that they found corrosion at the weld points and that's why BMWNA covered the replacement. They ended up replacing the gear selector arm and shift lever (Part# 25-11-2-284-598); which were shipped from Germany. Regardless, BMWNA thankfully made it right and covered everything 100%.

For clarification, I'm not the OP and didn't remove the shift boot or any trim to see what was wrong. I'm just glad to be reunited after 2 weeks+ of separation.

So they basically ignored their initial bullshit excuse why it wasn't covered and possibly embellished the reason it was warrantied to make it sound like BMWNA made an exception. Regardless of why the weld broke, it should be warrantied unless they can prove it was abuse that broke it.

Same thing just happened to me. Went to put car in reverse and shifter just flopped over like a wet noodle. Tech at dealership said it was probably caused by "the way I drive the car". Super pissed. I have been driving manuals my whole life, saved for years for this car and take meticulous care of it. Luckily it's covered under warranty but do not appreciate the dealer's comment nor the amount of work they need to do to replace this part...

Probably bad welds that causes this, also environmental conditions.

The part is under $100 not sure why dealers charge $1,000 for this repair? I doubt the transmission needs to get dropped for this repair?

Glad I’m doing the AS SSK install soon. Seems like a batch of bad welds.

Looking at the picture of @ricko32, I can say 100% that it is the fault of bad welding.

I used UUC short shift kit for my e46 m3 and it was not to my liking, I was able to literally move the shift knob up and down and the shifting was so sloppy, I have the auto solutions SSK for my M2C and I love it!!!

Just broke mine. Feels exactly the same. Took it out of reverse, into first, and then to reverse again, and it didn’t go to reverse again. The gearstick just flopped around. Stuck in neutral, at least, so could get it on to the flatbed.
1 week after installing my AP racing BBK, 4 days before my track day. Not fun.

Ouch, bad luck.

Are you going to fit an SSK now?

No, I'm going to try and get them to fix it under warranty! It's not exactly like I slam through the gears...and I've been driving manuals my whole life. I know people aren't fans of the shifter but I don't really have an issue with its feel.

I would have them fix it and then consider an SSK, or maybe have someone inspect the welds on the new OEM part. I don't trust the stock shifter at this point, it's ridiculous that even a handful of people have snapped them at the weld.

It's definitely ridiculous!
I don't know if it's the weld here, but my symptoms sure sounds like exactly the same issue as others in this thread. Will know in a couple days. Will consider an SSK.

My main concern is that this is just like the turn signal issue where pretty much every single part is suspect.

Ah ok, you're still under warranty.

It's the same shift rod used on all M2 and M2 comp and F80 m3 and m4 OG and LCI since 2014.

Real oem only goes to 2019, but I'm sure it's still in use as it shows on other parts sites.

Not heard any problems on M3 forums??
