Windshield Problem

Hi All,

2020 M2C. I am looking at my 3rd windshield in 1 year. Is this unusual?

I suspect that the windshield is a stressed member, so if the car is cornering hard, any little scratch on the glass will result in a broken windshield.

Thanks
Ray

I'd say it's unusual or unlucky.

I'm about to replace mine again. It'll be my second replacement. Just unlucky.

In my case, it was hot out, and I had a small divot in the glass from a small rock. This will be the second replacement as well.

Thanks

That's all it takes, a small chip will weaken the glass.

It's not a stressed member as such but body flex (like hitting pot holes etc) may exacerbate any cracking.

I had mine broken 6 weeks old, just bad luck.

I dunno. I had a fairly decent sized rock hit the glass so hard it sounded like a gunshot. It made a circular crater but never spidered and I drove with it for 3 months that way since it was only in the passenger sightline and was not keen on replacing the glass. It did not seem fragile to me and I drove it pretty hard.

Three windshields in a year seems a bit much. I've had 3 done in the past 15 years.

Get windshield PPF! Especially if this happens to you often and/or you have to pay out of pocket for new glass

As many have pointed out, it is unlucky for you to change this much.

However, the M2C OEM glass does seem a bit more fragile compared to the other windshield and cars I've owned. I do have a chip that's been filled, thankfully it has not created an other integrities or weakened the overall windshield.

There are other threads around and owners have chimed in something similar.

Some have even broken their windshield when they accidentally dropped their wipers down after cleaning.

I've had ClearPlex on a different car before (windshield film/ppf), but just be mindful this also requires specific maintenance to keep it clean and scratch free. Otherwise, your film won't last long.

Best of luck!

Just pot luck how it hits the glass.

All screens are built to exacting cost and specifications, no way M2C screen will be any different from any other bmw of that age or any other car for that matter.

My mom bought a brand new Toyota Auris a few years ago and a small stone broke the windscreen a few hundred yards from the dealership, she just drove it right back to get a loaner...

In February 3 months ago I cracked my windshield just like you, I was washing the car and the passenger side wiper just came off and broke my windshield.

Fast forward to 2 months later, I was replacing my wipers trying to be super careful and guess what happened again? Broke my second windshield in 2 months. You can't even imagine how pissed I am.

This is the first time I've had something like this happen on a car, and worst of all TWICE. Maybe I am an idiot but this is unbelievable.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT - be very careful when handling your wipers, put some thick towels on your windshield when manipulating them because they also come off super easy and the force of the retracting arm is unbelievable and will slip off your hand, it's like they made it so they wouldn't move while traveling at the speed of light!

i had multiple chips and one complete replacement on my f30 in 20k miles (all highway to work). i think its a combination of the windshield being so upright and maybe cheaper glass.

i replaced my f30 335 with a 09 civic to daily drive to work. i've put 100k miles on it and just recently had to replace the glass. its windshield is heavily slanted backwards / obtuse, so that probably reduces some impact.

When i changed the wipers it took me 5 minutes just to figure out how to get them off. There's a really secure locking mechanism, designed to keep them attached at 150mph+

How do you get them to "fall" off??

I clean the rubber part of the wiper with the wash mitt that I wash the car and windshield with. Doing that cleaning motion of the rubber back and forth it simply came off. On my previous E82 135i the wipers were much more of difficult to remove, the new system in the M2 if you just kind of press the sides and pull it comes off really easy in comparison.

I've had a few cars and always hand washed them and never had this happen before. If you do a search on the M2 forums you will see all the people with an unusually high number of cracked windshields so I'm not the only one.

Anyone that is in the SoCal area I got my windshield replacement through Alfredo's Auto glass in Corona.

I had a hard time finding a shop to do it as alot of shops have questionable reviews and removal practices. Searching Alredo he had tons of videos on YT on how he does the install and most importantly removing the windshield. Some shops use force and a T handle knifes to cut the bead. DO NOT use those types of installers. This will mess up your A pillar and possible crack the oem glass making a mess inside your interior. Alfredo uses a fiber line removal system which has the windshield out in a few minutes.

He is very attention to detail and super professional. I even watched the entire process. Y

He used OEM BMW glass and molding also which is surprisingly cheap from the dealer.
