I'm about to do a stupid thing...
Currently own a 21 X5 M50i with 36K miles. Found a 17 M2 M/T with 12K miles that I’m looking into. I know going back may not be the move but something about cars a few years back drive and sound completely different then the new gen stuff BMW is putting out. Anyone experience any similar journeys??

M2 ownership side effects include increase in overall happiness, confidence, heart rate, rear tire ware, time spent looking at your car, and random dudes giving you a thumbs up on the highway. Please consult your doctor before embarking on M2 ownership
But to answer your question, if you dont need all the utility the suv provides the M2 is a fantastic replacement. Really fun to drive, reliable, easyish to work on. Pretty much hit their price point so you wont lose much if any on ownership. |

I've owned an Independent BMW Repair business for over 30 years now & have witnessed the evolution of BMW cars. My first BMW was an e30. It just "felt right". I joined the BMW Car Club, got into driver schools, left my corporate job, started the shop & got into racing etc.
After the e30, I bought a new turn of the Millenium Z3 M Coupe, as It "felt right" as well. Since then there haven't been many, or rather "any" other models that came through the shop that I just had to have. I thought about an e90 M3 & briefly flirted with a used 135is in 2019. Then a customer arrived with an M2C. In terms of performance and looks, finally there was another BMW I had to have. I found a 2021 LBB with barely any miles & 2 years of warranty left. I paid a lot for it during the "COVID used car craze" but so did the guy who had to have the 135is ![]() I still own an e30, my M Coupe and the M2C. The cars & especially the M2C make me smile everytime I walk up to one of them. If you're a car guy, your car needs to feel right & make you smile. Most of the new stuff, XMSAVs and even the M Cars - Meh? ![]() I think you made the right move! ![]() Drive, Smile & have Fun! ![]() |

I'm actually thinking of the opposite direction as you- currently have a M2C, looking to get a X5 m50/M60 as a daily. Before the M2 I had a X4, and have no regrets on the downsize, besides maybe trying to keep both for different duties. If you can I would keep the X5 along side the new M2. I'm not as up to date with the X5 platform future plans, but I think the current Gen will probably be the last "peak ICE X5" for enthusiasts.

That said I do get the financial burden of two cars, so if you don't need the space I'd definitely pick the M2. Financially speaking it'll hold value far better than your X5, so really boils down to what you are looking for in a car. If you need some additional space F80 might just do it too.

Suburb nyc and I plan to take the bus to work. I probably won’t get it though unfortunately I can’t keep both and parting ways with the V8, a car i strived to get and to give it up so soon, might be the ungrateful move.

An "impractical" car will never win the logic argument in justifying itself; sometimes you just have to do it. In my case, the M2 was exactly the type of car you "do it" for. ![]() |

Currently daily drive a X5 x40 and used to own an M2C. X5 is borderline unbeatable at being a great daily driver, M2C much more compromised and much more fun.
Couldn't be more apples to oranges and it really depends what you're wanting.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that the handling balance in my 540 is just as good as my M2C. The difference in the fun-to-drive factor lies in the higher limits of the M2, due to suspension tuning and less weight and length. As road cars I enjoy them both equally, and the 540 is very practical (though even the M2 works for my small family 95% of the time). Hard to imagine a tall breadvan being a better all-rounder. |
