Here's a video of the noise. I intentionally moved from side to side of the engine as the noise seems to be coming from the passenger side. Will be taking the car in on Monday. Any advice or suggestions is appreciated. I'll follow up on this thread...

Ticking and Fluttering Noises

Sounds like I have the same issue. Started happening sometime after having the 1200 mile break-in service done. Could it be due to going from a thicker oil that is used when the car is first delivered to the thinner one that is used for the service? Curious if the thicker oil keeps things lubed better when not running because maybe it sticks to the components more. I only drive the car a couple days per week, so I tried driving it every day for 4-5 days to see if that helped, but no improvement. It only has 1800 miles and it's 18 month old. The issue only happens during cold starts and also only happens when in the 750-850 RPM range, then goes away when it fully drops to 600-650 idle. However, I can get the noise to come back if I am able to hold RPM's around 750-850. Does this sound like the same issue as others have had with the incorrect tightening of the cams or something else?

I've also noticed a fluttering sound coming from the engine somewhere between 1250-1750 RPM and around 2500 RPM. It doesn't come across in a video, but I can definitely hear it in the cabin when it's fairly quiet. It also started happening after the break-in service. Searching around the internet and the closest thing to the noise I could find is this.

Anyone else have the "fluttering" noise?

Same exact sound here in F80 M3 as the OP and as the guy above. I had this sound since 20k miles (45k miles now) and multiple track days. Is it worth fixing it our of warranty? Is it really bad that i had it for so long?

Hey bro did you find a solution to the ticking noise? What was causing it?

Mine does it, but I'm not concerned as it goes when warmed a little and other wise all is sweet sounding.

Most engines make some odd noises when cold, especially with the bonnet / hood open.

Sounds like lifter tick. Warm the motor up all the way and then take the motor to redline a few times. This is how the lifters are bled.

Yeah meant to say sounds just like a hydraulic lifter might need a good hammering..

The S55 lifters are just bog standard cheap ones shared with pretty much every other petrol BMW engine.

Just to add to this, here is one example of a service bulletin
https://www.rtsauto.com/bmw-e90-valv...ter-ticknoise/

All BMWs are basically the same. With my S62 the procedure involved driving hard and taking the motor to redline when hot. There are variations of this SB everywhere in BMWs model line. The long and short of it is you need to get the motor up to temp and then DRIVE the snot out of it.

It's interesting because since these cars are so crazy capable and generate so much torque in low RPMs, short-distance trips and long periods of time without touching redline are going to make lifter tick more prevalent.

I had a similar noise to OP's post.

My car made a weird tapping noise on cold start, which sounded like it was coming from the top end of the engine. At the time my car had approx. 23k km / 14k mi.

Refer to the links below which clearly show the difference between how the car sounds on a cold start and after its warmed up (after an approx. 30 minute drive).

Cold Start:
https://youtube.com/shorts/QDf9iBTSk0o?feature=share

Warmed Up:
https://youtube.com/shorts/s3cdcPjblsE?feature=share

I took it in to the dealer for them to inspect it and carry out necessary repairs.

Overall, they carried out maintenance work on the exhaust camshaft. They replaced the gasket, 6 decoupling elements B13537628063 and 4 decoupling elements B13537577649.

Car sounded fine when I picked it up. I'll refer back to this post if anything else comes up.

If anyone can explain the following, I'd really appreciate it:
1) The function of decoupling elements
2) Whether them failing caused any premature wear or damage I need to be aware of

What year was yours?
Do you have the document that describes what parts were replaced or what work was actually done?

Cheers,

Cheers,

Interested as well. Did the SA share the correct torque spec if the cam was serviced? Thanks in advance.

I hear this jingle . A kind of Din Din ....non is very noticeable , can be heard when the hood is open , when the hood is closed it is almost imperceptible , but I do not like it . It seems to me different from those reported in this post . Car has 43,000 km . In the coming days I want to pay attention if there is a difference between cold engine and warm engine .

That sounds like regular injector noise, even and steady.

The cam knock noise is slower (1 per 2 revs) and more metallic.

Mine has the suspect cam knock noise, getting worse, I'm taking it to my indy soon for spark plugs and service and while it's in I'll them to get the cam cover off and check it..

Some updates : the rattling is only heard when the engine is hot . I checked oil level and it was just above half level . I added 0.7 liters of oil to bring the level to the maximum. The rattling seems to be gone at the moment.

Same noise as OP. Brought to two dealerships and they both said it's a normal sound and shoo'd me away after keeping the car for a few days…

Anything I can do to escalate this issue and have them actually do something? Still under warranty for another year.

2020 M2C here. Had the exact same sound and the dealer fixed it following the PUMA case #64203791-02. Basically they tightening the exhaust cam shaft. No more knocking sound.
