Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (PS4S) replacing Michelin Pilot Super Sport (PSS) in 2017

Seen this post by Jason in the General Section, so replicating it here: http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1311568

So it seems that performance wise the Michelin PSS are outdone by this new Michelin tire.

Interesting to know when BMW starts fitting these on newly produced M2's.

They will likely keep fitting MPSS and continentals for some time. New product from Michelin will go to vehicles where the new tire is designed for that model and also for immediate sale to tire vendors to get them to consumers.

I would bet that the next M5 will probably be the first BMW vehicle with the Sport 4s.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S (PS4S) is bound to replace the Michelin Pilot Super Sport (PSS) in 2017:Worth considering once the original M2 tires need replacement in the future.

The PSS are the consencus best overall street performance tire currently available. If the ps4s are that much better then the current ones, which is expected, then we as M2/3/4 drivers are good to go.

As a side bar, i'm kind of nervous about getting the Conti's on my new M2. I don't track but the Michelin's are top notch tires which I can't even request

The longevity test figure is quite striking: PS4S lasted 52K kms while the Contis didn't even reach the 30K kms mark !

OK, fairly speaking, nothing is said about the PSS, but still, apparently your Contis won't last long.

Looks like PS4S will be the new benchmark for high performance cars. Porsche, Ferrari, etc. won't hesitate to fit these if these improve all-round performance even more than PSS (for track-only purposes, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires will likely remain their preferred tire). But beware: AFAIK no precise info yet about prices. Given the impressive results, I can imagine that the PS4S will cost more than the (reasonably priced) PSS.

I lost the tire lottery and got the Conti's. Not terribly happy about that but I am loving the car so I won't let it ruin my experience. They are not a bad tire but I think we all know that the PSS is a better and more desirable tire. I will replace these when the PS4S comes out next year, maybe do a couple of track days on the Conti's first to get them used up a bit.

Of the Conti's they could have put on the M2 I would have preferred the DW, they use that tire at the M School and I found them to be very good overall, not quite as predictable at the limit as the PSS but good nonetheless. I think the problem is that even though it is a tire they use at their school its not one that is actually approved with the little star. I believe that because of supply constraints on PSS BMW was forced to look for an approved tire they could substitute to keep production going so they went with this old and not so great substitute.

The PS4S is replacing the PSS. Newer technology and design which will result in better performance. Michelin does a great job of improving their performance tires so I am sure this will be a fairly significant upgrade.

The 4S cannot be run in temperatures below 40. Below 30 and cracking may occur which means you are replacing all 4. Is that worth a little more performance? I ran the PSS in 7 degree weather with no problems. The tire was harsh and I felt like I was on hockey pucks. I am probably buying a set of Contis DWS 06 for this next winter. I just can't fit four tires in the car so I will have to make two trips to the tire man. For those of you who live in states where you don't reach the 30s, I am jealous.

Super sports are also crap under 40. Drive in the winter, you really need to get snows, aren't those just all season? You were kidding yourself if you thought the pss were fine in the winter. You need to get creative putting the tires in the car. 1 should go in the trunk, 2 in the back seats, and the other in the front seat.

I do not know what differences there are in OEM designated PSS tires, but I know the GM C7 Corvette PSS tires crack in freezing weather also. A widespread issue with cars parked outside in freezing temps on lots.

Instructed a student in a Cayman GT4 with MP4S and wow they are grippy. I thought they were factory Cup 2 R comps and then he told me they were the new 4S, very impressed.

Nice review!

Just had a set of MP4S put on yesterday. Cannot wait to feel them out a bit. I can at least say the ride quality is much better than the Sportcontact3s, from a 5 mile drive home.

Anybody know if BMW Factory has switched over to PS4S on recent deliveries?

Was wondering if my July/August car would have PS4S on them...

As did I. Already lodged a complaint with the dealership management just as a matter of course, they then directed me to call BMW corporate. Just got off the phone with them and they were admittedly less than helpful. I pointed out the fact that the Conti's were a known inferior tire to the PSS's and was told thats what all cars are getting....I quickly called BS on that. The BMW rep said the M2 was not designed for just the PSS and though it may have said that in 2016 that the 2017 were not. I realize the 2017 doesn't have any literature that says exactly what manufacturers tires would be used (unless someone has something that does) I get it, other tires "will work" but what is the point of releasing a car who's equipment differs from what is used in advertisements and testing. This is especially true with tires which we all know can be a saving grace, or in this case, major weakness in a vehicle.

I thought at first that the Conti's were ok but after 2 weeks and 1000+ miles on them I have to disagree. The road noise is terrible at freeway speeds and there are already showing signs of wear. Seeming as Ive been doing break in speeds/driving I cannot see where these should be showing anything. Ive had PSS's on 3 prior M cars and my 911 and, depending on what BMW decides to do, will be putting them on the M2. Guess the question comes down to who will be paying for the change.

We shall see what BMW corporate decides to do but my initial feeling is I will be told to pack sand. As with many here, we are longtime BMW brand enthusiasts (M cars in specific) and should be treated with a bit more care when they split how they equip the cars from the factory.

Does this take away from my absolute happiness with the M2? Not in the least. What it does do it make me question the way BMW Corporate views its customers. Awaiting their reply, BMW Corporate if you are reading this take note

Tire Rack test: Continental ExtremeContact Sport vs. Michelin Pilot Sport 4S vs. Pirelli P-Zero PZ4.

Report: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests...y.jsp?ttid=223

Their conclusion:
"Summary
With tire manufacturers' varying product cycles, a matchup as exciting as this is a rare occurrence, and these three tires did not disappoint. While access to the latest technology meant the two newest tires had the advantage in some respects, all of them are sure to satisfy enthusiast drivers of high performance vehicles.
The Michelin Pilot Sport 4S performs all the tasks expected of a Max Performance Summer tire at a very high level. From its athletic and composed nature on the road, to its best-in-test dry track figures, to its easily accessible performance in the wet, the Pilot Sport 4S really is the complete package. Continental's ExtremeContact Sport presents a compelling option, as well. Its behavior on the road is eager and lively, if not quite as refined as the other two tires. Objective wet cornering and stopping figures for the Continental are top-notch, but with a relatively narrow window that makes it a little harder to wring out every last drop of performance on the track. The Pirelli P Zero (PZ4) delivers a luxuriously sporty experience on the road coupled with a balanced and easy-to-drive nature in the wet or dry on the track, with traction levels that are slightly behind the Michelin and Continental in both aspects."
