Guys--

Just spent some time reading this thread-- excellent information.

On question: Is this applicable to a new 2020 M2C? I'm not sure if there are any differences between the OG M2, LCI M2 and the M2C.

TIA-- Still ramping up the learning curve.

From what I’ve gathered, there isn’t much difference between the OG M2 and the M2C in terms of components and packaging, except for the obvious bits.

Ok-- after reading this (and a few other threads), I put together a "shopping list" while I'm waiting for my M2C to go into production.

Anything I'm missing? Or don't need for a M2C?

TIA--

This looks like the same list that I put together. I thought the two parts above were, in retrospect, already installed?

I added the hood (bonnet) insulation today. It was amusing to see what one gets for $100. The part did not seem to have sufficient mass to make a before and after dB check worthwhile. On the positive side, the only way this takes longer than five minutes to install is if one drops a clip (plastic pin) and then chases it down :-)

Could anyone confirm this for the M2C? I don't want to blow the coin on these (about $50/each) if I don't need to.

TIA--

Sorry, I cannot help with this question. Yet. Might get there depending on how the rest of the sound deadening work goes.

I did install the two "sealing side panels" or "fender to body seals" on Friday. No dB readings. Still, first the hood insulation went in. Made a difference (to me). On top of that, these two news seals seems to further help (me) to enjoy the car.

The MPE is the major villain now. In drone mode, i.e. b/w 2800 - 3200 RPM, it's well ... er... amusing and annoying. Trunk insulation next. I'm rather optimistic about taking things down a notch so to speak such that a spirited hour of driving is as fun as the first 30 minutes.

Can't confirm for M2C, but the door panels are quite easy to pop off and check yourself.

I suspect that they are there, not just for sound but for moisture control

It's a lot harder to pop off the door panels when the car is still on the assembly line in Germany!

So I'm going to trial some Noico over the rear wheel wells as I think the bulk of the noise in this car comes from there. I will have a ton left over after doing the the trunk and wheel eels in my Golf R ( mostly for reducing some noise from my new Akarapovic/ Res delete which ironically after deleting the soundaktor isn't much louder than stock and making the subwoofer sound better).

My M2 has a Remus exhaust so I'm not shy about being loud. But on the highway on 2-3 hour trips I'd prefer a little peace. Ironically again the Remus exhaust IMO has a better frequency than stock but it isn't exactly the 330i loaner where I can hear my stomach rumbling before I get to Chic-Fil-A.

Additionally I sourced the hood sound deadening from a 4 series part out, $45. Now I'm just waiting on the clips from ebay.

I'll try and get some decibel app and take some pictures of my job so others can get an idea.

Well, I ordered all the sound insulation bits for my car

However, since I track my car, I'm starting to have second thoughts about installing the hood insulation and the door to fender seals

Not sure if the noise reduction is worth potentially trapping more heat in the engine bay

Any thoughts?

Covers for side section

Hood and fender-to-body notes

This week, I was able to add the covers that fit over the conspicuously large holes on each side of the rear seat.

41007294289 (cover for side section, left)
41007294290 (cover for side section, right)

A terrific reduction in noise. The hood insulation and the fender-to-body seal reduced the cacophony of noises to a situation where there where noises up front and noises from the back. Not just so much noise.

The side covers really changed things up! Driving the car is so much more enjoyable. Four hours with the side covers on and few thoughts on the interior noise.

The MPE is loud (to me) so I will add the insulation to the rear/trunk soon.

I always felt the door seals made an amazing difference, I did them 3 weeks into ownership.

I will say that there is little to no airflow in the door/fender seals, so that shouldn't be a concern.

I can see where the hood insulation might trap some heat, but unless you are already experiencing overheating issues, I wouldn't worry about it.

I was thinking the same thing

I will start with the door/fender seals first

So far, the cooling system on my M2C has been doing a fantastic job, but I also have yet to take it out in the extreme heat and humidity we can see in the summer

The hood insulation is also the largest and heaviest piece and would be placed in the least desirable place from a weight distribution perspective

In any case, like you said, probably nothing to worry about (although I will be more inclined to open the hood between sessions)

Where about in the Bay Area are you @Zeese? I'm in Sunnyvale, and would love to hear the difference compared to my car.

For a daily driver, the M2 is a bit too noisy inside for my liking. I love the sound with the windows down, but with them up I'd be happier if it were quieter, but don't want to drop the cash if the difference isn't that much.

Also, what was required to mount the panels to the bodywork? I see they have holes, which I assume are for push fit clips, but do you also need to put some form of gasket around the edge to stop it rattling?

Did my ASD delete, hood insulation and noico'd the left rear wheel wells and around the battery box with the limited daylight I had to work with today . My quick ear test is as follows:

1. ASD sucks. I should have done that delete when it came in the mail last summer
2. Definitely less noise coming from the left rear so I can't wait until I can finish the right later in the week.
3. The car feels more luxurious to drive around. I've mentioned before I will let the windows down for the exhaust note, this is mostly for the highway.

Lastly: I noticed my car has the sound deadening below the seats, is that supposed to be there?

North Bay Denizen. PM'd re: South Bay visits.

To me, the difference is stunning. I-280 from SF to 280/85 hurt the head. Not so much now! I also purchased musician's ear plugs just in case...

The hood insulation is minutes ...
The fender-to-body insulation takes longer ... probably easier with a helper
The two side panels ... 30 min each. The side panels pop off rather easily. I taped the inside of the two dinner-plate sized pans to avoid rattling in the future. The pins position the plate, but do not necessarily hold it firmly against the body. Preferring to find something tacky and redo the work. Still, no rattles, yet.

IIRC, there's an inventory in this thread. Part numbers and counts for the pins.

I've even mellowed on MPE drone. It's there, but not as invasive.

Hearing the best sounds now require the windows to be cracked. The burbling is there, but bigger smiles come with the windows down.

Kudos to the intrepid who led the way.

I took the first steps to doing this work this afternoon. I ordered both the side panels and the fender to body front of door insulation, but the side panels are back ordered from Germany.

The fender to body sections I picked up today though, and installed one without tools while I waiting for some take out to be cooked in a parking lot.

I was pretty disappointed with the part before I installed it, and couldn't believe it could make any difference. I had expected the foam to seal the gap between the door and the fender, but it's far smaller than that, and seals the pretty small gap between the fender and the body.

Once I installed it however, I changed my opinion completely. Having only the driver's side done made it very clear how much of a difference it made, cutting all of the high frequency sounds from the engine bay on my side, with them still clearly visible to my right! I'm not sure that you'd be able to record a huge drop in db, but it cuts the high frequency sounds dramatically, and that's a big improvement in itself.

I'm looking forward to the side panels coming in, and will almost certainly be doing the insulation over the wheel arches by the back seats and in the trunk at some point.

Side panel covers came in today and I fitted them immediately. Haven't driven to see the difference yet because it was raining, and my car is clean at the moment.

Looking forward to hearing the difference tomorrow though!
