rims and tires check in on plane

Has anyone ever checked in rims and tires on a plane? Especially someone going to the UK? any problems?
I am deflating and packaging the tires, but just want to make sure it is possible.

No, and I have never seen it (and I've travelled a bit and seen crazy packages checked in)! I suppose as long as packaged properly, and within weight and dimension limits, then why not? Call the airline

Tell them they are emotional support tires and you can take them as a carry on . But seriously, I'd think there might be a cheaper shipping option, especially for things as sturdy as wheels/tires - just protect the face and you could probably throw them off a bridge w/o hurting anything.

Cheapest option for me is to check them in as luggage, if not I am looking at 400 USD easy to ship them by Fedex.

I checked online, and it seems like ppl have carried rims/tires with no problem. We'll find out how it goes.

I'm just curious, how many packages did you have and how much did they weigh?

Awesome. I assume each one met the weight requirement (usually 50lb), and dimension requirement, right?

Did you look at you funny or had they seen this before?

I deflated the tires completely before packaging. Each tire/wheel combo weighed in between 19.5 kg and 20.5 kg (245 vs. 265) so definitely below the maximum weight.

Given I am priority flyer, I was allowed 3 luggages and wife 3. So we got them on along with our luggage for no extra cost .

Here's a pic.

Nice! Which airline and where were you flying from?

I need to get some wheels (only, no tires) from Seattle to Paris...this might be and option!

he's talking about having "status" on an airline. for instance, I currently have Platinum Pro status on American Airlines and I am entitled to 3 free bags due to the amount of travel I did last year with AA.

Not really sure why you deflated the tires... leaving them inflated would've provided a bit of extra protection (and fully deflating tires can, in rare cases, cause the bead to unseat which would mean you'd have to get them re-mounted).

But happy it worked out for you!

I admire your dedication to these wheels and tires. Maybe we should work together to up our international shipping game?
