I have an automatic tracker plugged in. Uploads info to my phone whenever it's in the car. Got it at Best Buy.

M2

The new BMW Connected app includes a location device. Download the app. Set up profile with vin number. Map shows the M2 location.

I also have Guidepoint vehicle locator.

That isn't suitable for the insurance companies.

Even without the app, BMW could tell you and the police exactly where your car is at any point, but they're not allowed due to data protection laws.

I also understand, but haven't checked, that there is a very strict distance limit on the app - something less than a mile. Maybe 1 km. Aka, if you're not within a km of the car, the app won't locate it for you (I'm told).

I have a tracker (Technocon Moving Intelligence, Dutch company)installed in my car. Is mandatory by many insurance companies including mine.

I had it in my other ('more expensive' /more prone to gta) M/BMW's too....

It costs €850,- (unit) as I recall and the subscription annually (24/7 vigilance/surveillance) is about €250,-

My dealer informed me about this company, they're collaborating with the company mentioned above, my 1M was
tracked by another unit/company...

Literally every day a trackday with my car...

Cheers
Robin

In answer to your original question, I've just been in contact with my dealer today and have got the tracker sorted. I'm having the BMW Trackstar fitted. Cat 5 which comes with a fob and is traceable all over Europe. £749 to the dealer for fitting and £168 for one year subscription.

is it not cheaper to just pay the £40 a month BMW insurance where they pay you money ontop of what your insurance will if something happens to it i.e got stolen or wrote it off? i mean don't get me wrong its great to have a tracker but maybe on a car worth £150k not 50k?

You're talking about "gap" insurance. The requirement to have a tracker comes from the insurance company, and it's not a choice. Either have a tracker or they won't insure it. Gap insurance is a completely separate thing and nothing to do with the requirement to fit a tracker.

I need an unlimited green card for driving in mainland Europe, and there is literally a choice of one insurance company who offers that, and they say they want a tracker fitted.

I need to correct myself. I received duff info from my dealer. £168 was for a class 6 tracker. The class 5 tracker, which is what I need, is £198 per year.

I just checked on this. I am at work, drove my other car today. The BMW Connect app did in fact locate my car, which is at my house and 10 miles away

YMMV?

None of which matters because if you report your car stolen BMW will track it wherever it is (provided the onboard cell has service) AFAIK.

Not necessarily. Not in Europe anyway. I know of a few examples of people who've had their car stolen but the police were not able to get BMW to tell them where the car was due to data protection laws. Madness, I know.

That must be EU-specific

I dunno for US spec, but with mine the app also works at (very) long distance.

Of course, if the car is located in a location where no signal can be captured (e.g. deep underground parking lot) or if you did not tick the 'GPS Tracking' option on the iDrive, the app won't manage to communicate with the car.

agree with Artemis about "deep" parking lot.

Here in US i have been able to track my vehicle from 200 miles away using my android phone and BMW Remote app! It shows up at my home garage.

With satellite image on the app it is accurate to at least 10 feet or 3 meters! Meaning the located spot is right on my garage.

Then again the key fob is also at home and well within the 1 mile or 1km alluded to in earlier posts.

I will need to check with the key fobs and M2 physically separated by a greater distance but I cant imagine why that shouldn't work!

Nice. Thanks for confirming! Out of curiosity, what exact app did you use? Remote or the new "Connected" app?

I use the 'BMW Remote' app.

The 'BMW Connected' app got quite some bad rap.

'BMW Remote' app:'BMW Connected' app:

Ok. Was wondering. For those of us the NA, there is a new app: BMW Connected North America by BMW https://appsto.re/us/AHOZab.i

Thanks.

Edit: Reply fail *sigh* Artemis
