I told the M2 faithfuls to not drink all of the pre release marketing hype It's funny how the argument before was the M2 is a raw "driver's" car. Now it's all of a sudden luxurious and refined? Which narrative do you want to stick to fellas? FYI, the M2 SCREAMS "boy racer". If you can't see that, you've got your rose colored glasses on as well while sipping that M2 Kool-Aid. I don't particularly care for the looks, but I would buy the RS over an M2. But that shouldn't matter. Every person (or magazine/blog/etc.) isn't going to prefer exactly what you do. Enjoy the car that YOU like most.

That's part of the beauty of the RS. It does not pretend to be something it isn't, it embraces it. The M2 isn't luxurious or particularly fast. It's an entry level "M" (that "M" part could be argued by some, personally I don't care). But according to some people on this forum, the M2 is the official chariot of God

2) The M2 isn't luxurious or refined (basketball leather interior...ftw?) 3) Hmm, I'm not sure what else you would call someone in an M2. Perhaps fanboy? Maybe poser? Who's the target market?

EVO COTY is certainly going to be interesting this year.
I expect both of these cars to feature. Will be interesting to see what all the journos consider to be the best "drivers" car. I've driven both, owned a 1M and own a M135i. The RS is a "great" car and my opinion changed after driving it. |

RS is impressive for it is but the 2.3l ecoboost 4cyl is a HORRIBLE engine. It is blowing up left and right in the Mustangs, i can only imagine it would be even less reliable since its even more stressed in the RS application.
M2 is a nice car but still leaves a lot to be desired in terms of how it looks outside and the interior design is not fit for a luxury brand. Its a great bargain compared to M3/4 but there is a reason for that.........

This is an interesting comparison- not convinced the same people will be looking at a Focus RS and M2 (of course there will be some). Growing up with the Ford Sierra Cosworth and Ford Escort Cosworth I understand the pull of the Focus RS especially in Europe, and more so in the UK. For the price this will be an outstanding purchase if that's what you want out of the car. 'Hot hatches' have a huge following hence the number of them. At my age I would go for an M2 over the Focus, but I would be happy to drive either one....

I happily admit the RS with any driver is also quicker then the large majority of the M2 drivers with their ''premium machines'' and ''BMW fanboys RWD driving talents''. And seeing so much butt hurt M2 figures here, only present to justify (no matter what) their choice (not even an objective opinion on the RS...), amuses me and makes me sad in the mean time (of having such an ''exquisite'' company, Thanks God my M2 will be a WE track car only...). |

That does bring up another issue: an average driver will be faster in the Ford than in the BMW on a track or on the road. I am absolutely sure of this, just as I am that if it rains you shouldn't even attempt to run the RS in your M2. The other side of this coin is obvious: the Ford with its clever AWD system does things for you to make you faster and save embarrassments or even worse, accidents. If that is what you want then it would be the perfect car for you. Personally I prefer RWD and all the nannies off. It makes me make mistakes, and I learn from those mistakes, and it makes me be just a tad bit cautious, and that keeps me alive. I like it like that. I like the fact that the M3 is a bit scarier and more difficult to drive than the M2. The only reason I drive a performance car is for this learning process: me, my machine, and the laws of physics. I know a few people who have switched from tracking GT-R's to M3's for this exact same reason. They downgraded and traded outright speed for interactivity and the feeling of being in complete control. But in the case of the M2 vs RS you aren't even trading off any overall performance. I would pick the M2 every single time. Even when it rains.

Very short track. Not the best lap time for the M2.
Ford RS is a good value for money in terms of performance, but when we're looking after some quality materials inside the cabin, we'll not find them.. For me, it's not a rival for M2, it's not a rival even for a Golf R. Looking at the Ford products... we see some good design, very good performance, but that's it... Performance for everyone who's not expecting premium.. M2 CSL will follow, that's the hardcore car for this series. Normal M2 is somehow the Ford's ST.. Is it good? It crashed its two main rivals from Audi and Merc.. So don't get drunk with water |

Trading in my e92 m3 soon for a focus rs.
Need 4 doors and winter capability and warranty is running out. Can't justify the m3 any longer. Just as some people said the rs doesn't excite them, the lack of torque in the e92 doesn't excite me any longer. |

A red flag quote for sure.
This is the quote to remember from the video: "The BMW M2 marks a return to form for the German brand's legendary Motorsport Division." Maybe the next-gen Gxx-based M3/4 will be as fun to drive as the M2. Or maybe not. Spy shots of the G20 3-Series prototype make it look like a 5-Series wannabe.

I have won big races in 4WD Fords and RWD BMW's. I have also won races at Llandow - on my Cannondale !! I am too young (57) to have raced at Llandow but I have tested there in anger and it is not a pleasant, safe circuit.
The circuit will have done the M2 no favours but neither would a windy, bumpy back road. Both cars have their merits and demerits. If I could have bought the RS as an interim car until my M2 arrives I would have done so because it is a helluva lot of car for the money. I have just come out of my 3rd M135i which is another serious value for money car. In summary both brilliant cars I think. But since I haven't driven either yet I will not get too excited. I am sure neither will disappoint. My M2 arrives Friday or Saturday so at least I will be able to pontificate with a modicum of authority. I may take it to Llandow but I doubt it. Much prefer racing my Cannondale around there ! |
