AA can now flash via OBD on updated S55 cars?

Direct question on the m340i tuned page, so it would appear AA has cracked it. Still surprised this hasn't gotten more coverage on the forums though.... I'm at 7200 miles now. Plan on tuning at 10k. Will probably go AA if BM3 is a no go by then.

I was just at AA a couple of days ago and discussed the issue with them as I am considering getting my 2020 M2C tuned

Based on what they told me, my understanding is that they made a special cable which allows them to flash updated S55s by plugging directly into the ECU (not through the OBD port)

This supposedly allows them to flash the ECU without having to physically remove it or back date the boot loader

In any case, like I said, that is just my understanding (I could be wrong)

I have a connection with someone inside AA and I’m waiting for an answer on this.

That sounds like the same method they're all using now. The difference is that instead of removing the ECU and doing it on a bench they have the car in the shop and manage to hook up the cable to the ECU without removing it.

Well, as I mentioned, I may have misunderstood what they told me and what I wrote above may be incorrect

As a result, I will refrain from commenting further at this point as I don't want to spread any misinformation

At least people wouldn't have to send there DME in the mail and wait I guess. Does this method then unlock the obd port or did this cable need to be used every time?

Once the DME is backdated, yes, you'd then be able to flash via OBD at will.

The toughest part is just getting the connections to the DME, it's still the equivalent of a bench flash though, just some people have better harnesses than others and don't need to remove a whole ton of crap.

That's ingenious, kudos to them for possibly finding a work-around to OBD2 and connect directly to the ECU but I do wonder how safe is it though..

Could someone please verify if this is actual fact or just speculation..

It looks like they have authorized dealers all over the US that can do it. Now we just wait and see if they really have something working...

I really hope this is the case because I'm tired of stock. The car is so much more and I can feel the detuning they did if that makes sense

One thing I don't understand. You ship off DME or maybe they figured out some way to do it at a local shop w/o removing, whatever your software is back dated.

What happens when you take the car in to BMW for service? Isn't it immediately obvious to technician you have some older software version on there?

Outside of that, what's the chances service will upload latest version of software to fix some other issue and you are back to zero again?

I'm sure this has been answered a 100 times, but haven't run across anywhere on my casual readings.

I believe the general consensus is that you need to tell the service department not to flash or update any software without your permission.

I have a 2019, I just told them not to update the DME, they didn't.

Is it though? He says they use an enet cable, which I'm assuming is this?

Yes, but Ethernet cable to what? You are showing an OBD on the other end. Is that what they said?

Yes, they said an Enet cable, which they sell on their site and looks identical to the one linked above.

I'm however skeptical that AA figured this out.
