Prototype turbo boost gauge with peak hold on BMW centre display

I'm developing a turbo boost gauge for BMW M cars. This is still a prototype so not ready for release, but here is a teaser very short Youtube video here

The best feature I think is it has a peak hold function that holds the peak boost value for about 3 seconds, so you can keep your eyes on the road, floor the throttle, let boost build, back off, then look at the yellow peak value. After 2 seconds it resets back to real time manifold pressure values. Vacuum is red, boost is green, peak is yellow. The previous six peak values are displayed on the top right hand side in a text box, and also written to a text file.

Oil and coolant temp are shown on top left.

As you'll see in the video, this is being displayed on the OEM centre display, but I also have an option of a stand alone 4" or 5" display that would mount on the dash or windshield.

Would anyone on here be interested in something like this?

Cool idea, but would be better if you could make it more like the P3 gauge.

Hmm. How are you getting it to display on the OEM screen? I'd be interested in something that can do that.

I thought about using one of the wifi OBD adapters to connect to my phone, then screen mirroring to the dash screen.

Same question, would love to be able to get all the OBD info (oil temp/pressure, water temp, boost, battery voltage, etc.) directly on the center console. Ideally this is what "sport mode" should display rather than the HP/torque "meters."

Interested in testing it out as well!

I think you should build something to compete with AWRON. If there was an AWRON alternative integrated into the OEM display and didn't take up an air vent I'd be very interested.

Looks good to me. I presume it could be turned off and on, so that the other information otherwise available through the screen would still be available? This would be a great track tool, but on the street I personally would not need or want to see all that info to the exclusion of anything else...

I mean no offence when I say this, because I'm sure the coding of the boost gauge UI took some effort, but the really huge thing I'm seeing here is that you have an app either running natively, or screen sharing to the iDrive!

I run a BM3 tune, and currently use the dashboard app on my phone to monitor many aspects of engine health, and it's already customisable to an extent. The big issue is that it runs on my phone, and I'd rather it be shown on the iDrive screen like yours does.

I'd therefore like to ask the following:
  • Are you screen sharing, and the app running somewhere else? If yes, how is this part of your solution working?
  • Would you consider working with BM3 to take the data from their OBD Agent (available over WiFi in the car) for the hundreds of other parameters available to be shown / charted?
  • Are you using the OBD port for your data feed, or a separate boost gauge connected physically to the engine? If you're using OBD, are you using the CAN bus for data, or the much faster and more flexible E-Net approach like BM3?

Good effort here! Interfacing with the MMI is a neat way to keep the OEM look, while getting all the benefits of a multi-gauge. I would be keen to know more about this... Wonder if you plan on implementing multiple views for different user needs?

For my use-case, I want a very small, always-on OLED display in a 3D printed housing that can be tucked away, that I can glance at, at any time without having to navigate menus. I'm making my own low budget ESP32-based gauge with an OLED screen and focus on monitoring temps rather then boost, although boost is a gauge view I'm also planning to implement.

Sub'd! As others have said, I would not focus on a standalone gauge but on the integrated gauge.

Awron, P3, and Lightweight (actually think this is the Awron) and AK-Motion have already beat you to the add on gauge punch.

Very interesting. Is this a CarPlay app you are developing, with the phone connected to OND over BT/WiFi? Would be a great product!
