New G42 M240i vs F87 M2 side-by-side comparison look
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com This is the first time I'm seeing it in person. The new car is definitely a bigger car compared to the outgoing model. I will say it looks a lot better in person that it does it pictures; however, I'm still not a fan. Something about the lines on the car are funky. The lower black trim on the sides is not helping either. They should have kept it all one color. Anyways thought you all would enjoy some side by side pics. [IMG][/IMG] |

Does that M240i look high as a truck or is it just me?

The new 2 series looks terrible to my eye, I'd pick an Audi S3 over this.

No doubt it’s ugly. To me it just looks very Japanese style wise. Almost Nissan 240/Skyline like.

Yikes. F87 looks, size and proportions are shockingly better. I don't want a G87 porker. Why can't BMW design exercise design discipline within model ranges?
Randomly - is it me or does the front of the new 2 series looks a lot like the swept back look of the e60 5 series? |

The shadow line crap makes these cars look worst for sure. Lets see how the m2 looks no way I will get agree that the Gs look as good as the Fs and I dont even dislike the G80s that much.
Its a tough one though because I don’t love the old 240, its missing something that the m2 has. I have a feeling I will be keeping the f87 for a while |

The tail lights are just awful on the g42. Unfortunately those will probably be the ones we get on the g87

I like the front 3/4 angle, especially in purple but the rest of the car doesn’t do it. The back is terrible (m235/240 have not so great rear ends) and dang its huge!!! |

I must say that I just don't like the way the G42 looks at all. The F87 just looks like it belongs with the cars that I grew up loving (E30, E34, E36, E39, & E46). It's styling has clear through lines to cars and designs of the past while still looking more modern and having its own identity. Even if you take out my fondness for the cars of my childhood and teenage years; I don't think the G42 looks well proportioned. The headlights look too swept back and high. The headlights of the F87 just look more aggressive and predatory. Additionally, what is up with those side intakes on the lower bumper? I just can't see how anyone thought that looked good. The rear end is total mess, worst since the Bangle Butt. All that said, I was not a fan of the E6X & E9X cars initially but I now find them a lot more attractive. Maybe that will be the case with some of these G chassis cars?
You can see in the picture below what I mean about the F87 tying well with some of the older cars. |

Have to say the G42 is a darn sight better looking when it's not beside an M2CS. Comparison does it zero favours.
One of those front ends makes me happy, the other makes me sleepy.

I was on the first bandwagon carrying a can of whoop ass in one hand, and a pitch fork in the other when I first saw this new deuce coupe design last summer.
Having seen it in real life in my eyes it looks a whole lot better than it gives off using virtual media tools, and Thunder Night metallic has to best one of the best paints for a non-M variant to be offered of all time. But I also like the E82 design, enough to have had both a 135i first, and now a 1 M, so take that with a pinch of pepper spray. Yeah, the back end may take some getting used to. But the F22 and F87 weren't any great shakes in that area either. Take a look back at the early comments about the rear end of the F87, and you'll see that a lot of people were upset that it was dead common, and rather uninspiring. I actually don't mind BMW swinging from their heels for their fences with the Zwier Reihe (2 Series), as the model's intent is to attract a younger audience. Since looks are subjective, not everyone is going to agree whether they hit the ball square, fouled it off or screwed themselves into the ground, swinging and missing. This car even in basic trim should be provocative and a bit avant garde. You can leave stale and conservative to the 3, 4, 5 and 7 series. I fell head long for the E82, because it was a totally different cut of sausage than the rest of the model line-up. Plus, it was a departure from the size and weight creep the brand has continued to inflict upon itself. A modern sized E30, but with the same playfulness and eagerness to please in analog guise. Not saying the same sentiments for the G42 as it's rather porky and has way more tech and distractions to be considered an analog driving experience (although does set it up nicely as a daily driver), but I like that out of the box it has set itself apart enough that it won't be mistaken for a mini-me 4 series. I'd like to see the G87 build on the G42's strengths by adding blistered fenders and rear quarter panels to lend it some panache. At the very least we can all thank the G42 that it guarantees it won't have the ridiculous schnoz as the G8x variants. And at some point offer a real CSL with weight saving features. That would be a nice night-cap to what likely will be the last ICE M the marque offers.

Wait! Is that E46 M3 in Le Mans blue Individual paint? Or are my eyes playing an optical delusion on me.
