NAVI Sucks
Used NAVI yesterday for the first time after two years. Spent 15 mins trying to find the display that shows the graphiic along with the directions on the side. (This is most common and other NAVIS).
Apparently this does not exist on the BMW NAVI. In addtion the directions were totally wrong. Good thing I had my iPhone to help. |

This is one of the best navs avail. Talk to me about how much the newest Volvo one sucks - it's horrible.

You should be able to take anyone with average intelligence, put them in the car and be able to find their way around a Nav system without having to consult a manual. Do you agree or disagree?

The BMW system is so incredibly easy and intuitive. if you struggle any remote bit just use voice commands... the VC on Idrive 5.0 and 6.0 and soon to be 7.0 are 2nd to none in the auto industry. |

As usual none you understood the question. It is not intuitive to have to split the screen to have the seconday display.
Furthermore I asked about how to show the values I want on the display. The secondary display only shows the next 'move. I am used to seeing a list of 'next moves'. So MrOhnoez with 170 posts is suddenly an expert on BMW's. You must be one of those that got some money from mommy and daddy and bought a BMW. Compared to other NAVIS I have used this one is not intuitive. |

I think it's really good actually. It's far better than the Navigation system that was in my MK7 Golf R and light years better than the system in my wife's Subaru Outback. If you think this system is bad you are going to hate 95% of the systems in most cars.

I don't know about that. We have a Chevy Cruze and a Porsche Macan along with the BMW. Both of those navs are much easier to use than the M2's.

It took a minute to familiarize myself, but I prefer iDrive 6 to any other system I have used. This car is the only one I haven't felt the absolute need to fire up Waze in. Everyone has their preferences, though. The backup camera and sensors, on the other hand, are an absolute joke: warnings and graphics obscuring the view, the awful gong, not being able to start the car in reverse without said awful gong sounding until you turn the car off again.

Remember the functionality of the Idrive in the 5.0-6.0-7.0 they have ALOT more features than either of those 2 cars have possibly combined. Feature all those into a infotainment system in a simpler manner. The only issue I've ever had with the I-drive is the ability to allow me to end navigation from the navigation page, as opposed to having to do it from the map page only, or use voice commands. I program it as button number 7 to make it easy. |

Alternatively, just leave the split screen showing something else (I normally keep mine on the remaining fuel range mode). if navigation is active, as you get close to a turn, it "overrides" and shows the "lane guidance" images over there, including representations of highway overhead road signs if the map data contains it for the road you are on. You'll also get the lane guidance overrides in the cluster display, even if you don't have the next-turn option active at the time (I usually switch back to digital speedo, but when a turn is coming up, it overrides and shows the guidance instead). I think there's another way to get the list of turns in the main section of the iDrive screen as well though, next time I use nav I'll look for it. I haven't tried asking it to show that list with voice commands, but it might well be able to get you there by voice as well. About 50% of the time that I use the nav, I just invoke it by voice - "navigate to [address]". I'd say 80-90% of the times I use voice, it works as I expect, or at least close enough to not be super frustrating. Some people find anything beyond Garmin or TomTom GPS systems (which are very basic IMO) to be too complicated. Other people actually want the ability to get more information out of the system, which I think BMW does a fairly good job of. I love the configurability of the system, the split-screen is particularly nice... although I do wish there were a few more options to show in the split screen section. Where I get irritated with iDrive is the boneheaded volume system...

Sell the car. It's the only option.

So there is an arrow display that's available. Should be under split screen menu. As for the directions being wrong, with you there. There is a freeway in San Diego (I-15) that if you go south, for some reason it'll always ask you to take a random exit, then immediately get back on the freeway from said exit. Also comically, I tried to navigate to the airport and it recommended I drive across the runway. I'll need to see if I can find that picture.
Edit: found it |
