A couple of annoying things if you're wanting to hear the actual engine/exhaust from inside:
1) No natural engine sound available to your ears, unless you roll down the windows and rev it. In other words you are prevented from being aware of what the engine/exhaust sounds like. 2) The ASD does not correctly measure engine load to replicate the sound and volume appropriately - it gives bad feedback. That 75-80mph example is one example. So it's like while driving you're in one reality with the real engine/exhaust (people outside of the car can hear this). But inside your car, constantly fighting to replace that reality, is an imposing, artificial, unfaithful video-game sound effect generator. . |

But the production date is 07 May 2016, at a plant in Germany. Whatever Model Year it is, the audio coming out of the HK speakers is just terrible. |

Sprung for a iOS based coding app (BimmerCode ($30)) and while I was getting rid of the legal disclaimer iDrive screen and turning off the headlight washers, tried coding out ASD to observe the difference on a US spec 2017.
Wasn't dissatisfied with ASD per se, but, in a highway/cruise control situation, hard to imagine MORE steady state noise being desirable. And with this app, easily reversible, so why not give it a go? First quick test drive impressions: - Definitely noticeable difference in all modes, but really interested in an getting out for an interstate cruise to see if it's noteworthy - I now can hear the workings of the turbo if I listen for it with the sound stereo system "off". With ASD on, I'd never before noticed it. Will leave it for a few days, and form some further conclusions, but as easy as this is to turn on and off, could easily see me turning it off for long highway trips at least. |

Even with the windows up and interior sound deadening materials, the ASD masks what you would otherwise be able to hear of the engine and exhaust. Your brain naturally recalibrates listening sensitivity to its immediate environment, adjusting to the loudest sound source (speakers). So your hearing is being hijacked - entirely by artificial means. ASD is supposed to provide some "expected" in-cabin engine sound. And yes it produces a plausible enough sounding drone noise for most people, but it's not reproducing the engine sound of the car you are actually driving. As sophisticated as ASD is, it's still a stop gap engineering effort. And the problem of a faithful engine sound reproduction remains. |

I was about to correct my statement, but you already did. Unlocking coding is $40 in Canada, plus $30 for adapter shipped.

Cheaper than a one time coding fee and you get to do it yourself anytime you want.

Who said it was? Look at how many people post on here about 'what exhaust....' They are not interested in actual performance only the appearance of performance. They'd rather spend thousands of dollars/euro/sterling on parts that make noise and deliver zero gains than spend hundreds on actually being quicker.... |
