That looks like they took an M4 and simply shrunk it....

Besides the obvious flaws in the render, the front of the car looks hilariously high off the ground - this was a good laugh on a rainy Monday morning.

Yes not the best render on that link. AY doesn't seem to suit it shrunken either.

Sigh just more waiting around then for a reveal of sorts. What's the realistic reveal date of a concept now then guys?

It's either April in New York, August at Pebble Beach, or September at Frankfurt.

Agreed - I would have think something a lot closer to "done" would have surfaced by now, especially if BMW is showing the car to Swiss dealers behind closed doors.

I wonder if they will do something completely unique for the M2 - a private event that we aren't even aware of at this point???

April. Just enough time till the November start of production.

I think the M4 concept was shown 4 months prior to production? So April would be early.

Look, I'm fully prepared to be let down again. I don't think it will be in NY.

It speaks volumes when someone (and not just you) are prepared to be let down...again.

Won't Frankfurt show the actual production M2?If they are going to show the concept car,my guess would be that it will be sometime this spring.

You guys are correct. I still think BMW will opt to reveal it at a private event rather than NY. I think they're going to want all the attention.

I'm rather scared about the resurfaced rumors regarding limited production. That would suck if they hype it so much and then it's so hard to get one. This wait has been strenuous enough already.

Edit: Also, I wonder what used M3/M4 prices will be by then...

What is the source of the limited production rumor? I feel like it is solely speculation and I really hope it is incorrect. If the M2 will be limited/ hard to get that means they will sell at or around MSRP. At that point I may opt for a used M4 with LEDs, CF roof, and S55 for about the same money.

Ya know, I'm not really sure the exact reason why it's sprung up again. I believe some member's let their imagination run a bit and it started a chain reaction. (And I understand why).

And that chain has hit me too. I guess with this extreme build up of speculation so far in advance of the reveal, comes some ill-inspired rumors as people lose their patience.

And it's funny, does BMW generally not sell cars above MSRP now? I mean, weren't M4's going for 15k over MSRP?

I went for a test drive in a Corvette Stingray, and they were selling it at 10k over when it first came out. Does BMW not do that?

Here I am worrying that the M2 will be listed at 10k over MSRP at launch....

FWIW: an attempt of a brief 1M timeline:
  • 8 July 2010: teaser video "Step 1";
  • late August: teased at a private event in the US (Oktoberfest 2010) - no full reveal;
  • 18 November 2010: revealed to a small group in Leipzig (including a couple of forum fellows);
  • 20 November 2010: teaser video "Step 2" (about the 18 November 2010 reveal);
  • 8 December 2010: teaser video "Step 3";
  • 13 December 2010: Skiddmark full reveal video made available on YT ("In the Studio with BMW's 1 Series M Coupe | SkiddMark");
  • 16 December 2010: BMW full reveal video through Bimmerpost made available on YT ("11+ Min Video of BMW 1 series M Coupe (1M). Acceleration, Track, E30 M3 Footage");
  • January 2011: world premiere at Detroit Motor Show);
  • March 2011: start of production
  • May 2011: raving car journalists reviews pour in, the 1M is (un)available at ///M dealerships and the frenzy goes ballistic;
  • 2011-2012: release of three commercials ("Walls" - "Helipad" - "Perfect Balance");
  • 2014: the 1M resale prices take a significant hit after the introduction of the M3/M4 - oh wait, let me read that again...
Maybe BMW plans an M2 small group reveal later this year ?

I agree that the M2 will most likely sell above MSRP at launch due to hype. I will most likely wait until the second year model once the initial hype has dissipated to have more negotiating power. If the car is limited then the price will remain elevated, which I am hoping is not the case.

There's gotta be a dealer somewhere that will sell it at MSRP at launch... that was the case with the Stingray at least. But then again, the stingray isn't limited production.

It will be a mistake if production is limited thereby elevating the price just like with the 1M. The M2 and 1M before it are supposed to be entry M cars to lure younger buyers to the brand. What's the point if potentially limited production causes prices to be on par with the M3/M4?

The mistake will be that folks like me who are interested in an M2, but not completely obsessed with owning one, will buy something else that is not a BMW.

Don't get me wrong, the 235i and M4 are both on my radar, but next fall and winter will have a ton of car buying options for the enthusiast.

That's for the MY16's, not entire production run (I would think)

Easy way to find out. Just look up the F80 and see if it lists separate production dates for each model year.

I can tell you 100% if I can't get one at MSRP highest then I'll be looking into used F80 M3's or another brand altogether.

Luckily in the UK, main dealers would be hung drawn and quartered for selling over list, my salesman has guarenteed this to me. He stated I will definately not pay more than retail, we are simply not allowed.

Lol but luckily in the U.S., we don't have to pay as much money to start out with
