I have an M2 comp with the m4cs tune. And a stock x3 m40 2020 with the b58tu. The b58 has more torque below 2500 rpm and feels less laggy at low revs. But it's not as aggressive as the s55 in the midrange and the s55 with the CS tune has a monstrous midrange. But the b58tu is very, very impressive. It's probably the best engine I've experienced. Incredibly smooth, near instant torque, free revving, and pulls very well at all rpm's for a turbo engine.

This still a discussion in 2022?
The S55 on the M2 is faster than the B58 on the supra, 0-60 values are all tracktion based only. At high speeds the difference is very noticeable. |

Yes, it's still a discussion, and the operable word is "feel." The B58 does feel like it has more torque down low than the S55, and so does the N55, it just is what it is.

I feel like it's less to do with the engines themselves and more to do with the mapping.
BMW could have made the M2 Comp an M2 on steroids and had it go like a rocket from 1500rpm but they wanted to make it a more track-focused car that's controllable. What good is a track car if you can't control it? Whereas the M240i, OG M2 etc. are made for the street, and they want to blow you away from the moment you press the pedal (which they do) The M2 comp is fast as hell but it's not nearly as fun as the OG up to like 70/80mph. However from what I have read once you tune then the Comp is another level. Obviously, not everyone wants to tune though and I agree, I wish they made it more aggressive low down. In an ideal world, the Comp would pull like the N55/B58 low down (well even harder) and then progress through the revs like the S55 does.

The only Porsche I ever went out in was a 911 Turbo S and that thing was a rocket. Just looked at your profile and it says 992 TTS? Surely the M2 Comp doesn't feel torquier low down than the 992 Turbo S? Don't break my heart here

Motorsport/performance versions of many cars are intentionally limiting torque at lower rpm especially when the steering wheel is turned… this is to reduce snap oversteer. Remember that pre 2017 M3/M4 cars would oversteer easily coming out of turns, the same S55 motor with competition tune is now limiting torque at lower rpm for better control…
My 2017 Giulia Quadrifoglio clearly limits torque coming out of corners/turns until the steering is fully straight, then I feel a surge of torque.. So this is not turbo lag/transmission software issue but actually intentional tuning as such by the manufacturers.. |

The B58 is torquier down low... this is because it has smaller turbos and is mapped a bit differently. This is also because this is the engine used in most BMWs that are made to be daily driven... this makes it more comfortable to drive around town stop light to stoplight.
As far as midrange and outright power... there is no comparison... the S55 would run away like a jet... it has way larger turbos and can produce far more outright flow. Like someone mentioned, it's also purposely setup with a linear tune to be easier to drift and come out of corners when tracking... its the same exact story w the newer S58... some say the S58 has even less grunt down low.

I've owned the M235i with the N55 and now have the M2C with the S55. The M235 was a rocket in everyday traffic but lost its breath at higher revs. IMHO the stock M2C tune is more linear. However, just a slight tune turns the S55 into a monster which needs stickier rubber to keep the car from constant wheel spin.
