I'm interested to see what you come up with. I was considering trading my Lincoln MKZ in. Just bought it in July and was offered $4300 more than I paid in trade value. And no, it wasn't extra mark up on the car I was buying. I'm old and I have seen alot in the car business but have never seen a time like this. I think you will get some really good offers.

My nextdoor neighbor is the one who pushed me over the edge on this. Same story as you. He's got a Subaru Outback that he bough used 3 years ago and was offered more for it than he bought it for. It's insane. I had always planned to only keep the M for about 7 years but with the market where it's at and the fact that I only put about 4,000 miles a year on it, it just seems crazy to let it sit in the garage collecting dust. Registration is due in a month ($600ish) and it'll need new tires this summer. So selling now just seems to make sense. |

I sold my 2015 328i M Sport in April/May timeframe, so a little before the latest craziness, but the info might be applicable.
- Had it valued for trade-in at two local BMW dealers and they both came it at about $9k. It was in great shape, but they didn't really seem to want it because it had about 100k miles. - Registered with KBB and Vroom in March before I ordered my car, and the Vroom offer (about $12K) was much higher than KBB. However, the offer was only good for 7 days and I was about 6-8 weeks away from my new car. - Went back again about 5 weeks later and the online offers had flipped completely, with KBB now ahead at about $11k. - Got the final delivery date for my new car and then went back to KBB and Vroom again and KBB was up to $11,800, which is the offer I took. One KBB dealer (you will get offers from several, but its always the same KBB price offer) was a local Ford dealer, so I went by there so they could inspect it and verify condition. I dropped it off and picked up the check a day later. |

But recent changes in the laws require new plates and tabs when a used car is registered. But the previous owner doesn't get to save the old plates.

I see. Fancy garage art for my buddy then. It was kind of an ordeal for him to get the plates in the first place. I'm going to return them to him the first chance I get.

I'm pleasantly surprised with CarMax. Took under an hour and they came in with what feels like a pretty solid offer for a 5 year old M2 with an accident on the carfax. I'll keep shopping it around this week but at least I've got this offer to anchor to.
EDIT - Wow does it pay to shop around. I'm stunned. Carvana = $31,102 Vroom = $36,975 KBB = $40,272 CarMax = $43,000 SHIFT = $44,100* Internet offer only. Needs to be verified by an in-person inspection. Need to call my local BMW dealer and a local broker on Monday. Last edited by DETRoadster; 12-19-2021 at 06:58 PM.. |

Honestly I'm leaning heavily towards Carmax. They didn't give 2 shits about my Fabspeed cat and I walk out with a check in hand. SHIFT offered more but they need to come inspect the car to verify things, then take it back to their facility to do a thorough evaluation with a technician, then they initiate a bank transfer. The whole thing seems like it's geared to give you a top offer, take your car, then find some BS to whittle down the offer after they already have your car and it's been a week. I'll bet most people cave and are like "ok fine, just pay me already." |

I would take the carmax offer and run. That’s a very good price. I’m really surprised at the spread of offers, anytime I check those sites they are all within a couple of thousand bucks of each other.

Yep, talked it over with my wife last night and that's the plan. Might be able to squeeze a little more outta the deal with some work on my part in prepping the car to sell to a place like SHIFT that wont take it unless I swap the OEM cat back in, or the local consignment idea. But that Carmax offer is solid and requires zero effort on my part. Sometimes the path of least resistance is the best route. Ill post back up when its complete in case there are any hiccups or points worth mentioning for others who may be going down the Carmax path in the future.

And just like that, it's gone. Took the $43k from Carmax and ran. Very easy transaction and I'm very satisfied with the payout. I'd recommend them to anyone in a similar situation who wants to sell and doesn't want to deal with private party.

Thank you, sir! Still cant believe it's gone given how long I waited for the car (I was #2 in Seattle to take an M2 delivery back in December 2016). But I dont think i'll regret it ultimately. Other priorities in life right now.

Just sold a Mazda CX-5 that we paid $26.5k for in 2019 with 13k mi. for $30k private party. Simply do the transaction at your bank or theirs. The only verified funds are wire transfer or direct deposit. If the buyer has cash, meet at your bank and have your bank verify it's all real (by accepting it) prior to signing the bill of sale, title and handing over the keys. Only accept a cashier's check put in your hand by the bank representative.
For example, the buyer wants to give you a cashier's check. Response: OK. We'll meet at your financial institution and they can hand me a cashier's check. Keep in mind a buyer could buy a cashier's check from the financial institution and then hand you a fake one, so the cashier's check has to come directly to you from the bank. In my case, the only person I had to put trust in was the buyer's bank and rep representative. I had to trust that they would indeed pay off my loan and that the cashier's check they handed me was good. That was an acceptable level of risk for me. Private party sale is the only way to go. Those that don't go this route lose thousands of dollars. But I understand that some are afraid of the whole process so losing that money is OK with them. |

I guess I should count myself lucky in being able to trade a few thousand $ for convenience. Honestly though I'm not sure how much more $ I could have gotten private party for a 5 year old M2 with an accident on the Carfax. Not like someone is going to roll in with $50k. So maybe a few thousand more but I doubt I'd crest $45k. Oh well, it's all speculation at this point. Its done and gone. On to the next adventure! |
