Clearly, MG will have better resale value.

This is because, based on my extremely scientific and statistically significant sample of 1 (me), MG owners can't fathom the thought of ever selling their M2, and therefore these cars will be highly sought after by millions of people.

But there won't be any MG for sale, except in catastrophic situations or perhaps extremely unfortunate yet irreversible momentary lapses of judgment on the part of some MG owners.

The referenced study was conducted in a strictly controlled environment filled with only the highest quality vodka, and is therefore unequivocally valid and unquestionable in its results.

I hope this is helpful.

The future owner won't care whether BSM or MG: (s)he will buy the car and wrap it immediately in the signature red launch color of the M2 CS and add a black "CS" badge on the trunk, as well as dedicated M side mirrors of the M2 CS.

I went BSM. Black is a pain, but it suits the M2 brilliantly. This car looks best in dark colors, IMO.

Black vs MG was a tough choice.

Anyone who buys a brand new BMW and doesn't care about resale is a little off their rocker IMO.

If your goal is to drive the hell out of it forever, why wouldn't you buy CPO at least to scrub off the initial depreciation?

Otherwise for sure optimize for resale since you're obviously going to sell. To minimize the damage, pick the best options in the resale market. Those are almost always manuals and hot colours.

I know it's a bit of an enthusiasts car, but I'm not sure a manual gearbox would increase the value that much, especially if you trade it in to a dealer?

I know it's an enthusiasts car, but I'm not sure that manual gearbox would increase the resale price - especially if you're going through a dealer.
Just my experience. They are more rare and so you can command slightly higher prices. Those who want one want one slightly more than others.

They definitely do, especially because enthusiasts buying a CPO or similar used car are most likely the (and I hate to use the term) "hardcore" folks, who would enjoy a 6MT.

My Z4MC is a 6MT and commands at least a $5K premium over the DSG ones.

I prefer to order a car with exact options and color combination. That is hard to do with CPO or used for those of us who like specific and usually not dealer stocked vehicles.

As an example, I ordered my '13 X6M in Monte Carlo Blue with Mugello Red interior and pretty much maxed out options. To date, I have still never seen another one either on the road or on the used market with the same color combo. I know they are out there somewhere, seen photos, but never one I could have purchased had I gone CPO / used instead of ordering.

Also someone (me included) might want to do ED for the experience. Not possible with CPO.

Further, there is something to be said for getting that dream car brand new and owning it a long time, enjoying every mile. It is an enthusiast-centric approach, rather than a practicality-centric approach.

With the M2, and the limited possible variations of the car, finding a used one the way you like it is less of a concern. I found mine used, exactly as I would have ordered one, but there was no depreciation to speak of lol, I still paid for it!

DSG is relatively crude versus the current DCT and would be less desirable to many. Some folks hated them. I did not because the SMG in my e60 M5 on the track was great. Not so great on the street in stop and go traffic.

So tell me where to find a CPO M2 where I can scrub off the depreciation. That said I plan to drive mine for 5 years so I could care less what the next owner thinks.

I suspect the majority of people who buy a brand new BMW don't "think" about resale. They only care when it comes time to trade in, but by then, it is too late and I bet knowing what they know then, still would not have changed their decision.

To expand
When I ordered my 550 back in 2005, I got Comfort Seats, Comfort Seats, fold down rear seats, NAV, Monaco Blue, Cold Weather, and the sport package (plus upgraded stereo?)

At trade in, I found that the Comfort Access, Comfort Seats, fold down rears, and Stereo, all were worthless. The color did not add value either (didn't hurt that bad).

Knowing all of this now, the question is, would that have changed my order? No Frickin way.
