It better be 200kgs/400lbs lighter than having an S55 engine. It's about handling, not(only) hp. HP is for bragging rights.

I've been driving around with my N55 2017 for the past few days now, I really don't see this happening unless its for some rumored M2 GTS/CSL or something like that.

You got that from these sources, right ?
In those threads production of a 400hp M2 variant is rumored for 2017 and ranges from 200, 500 (also 500), 800 to 5000 (CS) cars and prices ranging from at least €100K to €120K.

And to further speed up the rumor mill, the rumor is thrown in of a "450hp variant à la M4 GTS" for 2018.

I think this rumour is a good way to give the late adopters (those well into 2017 delivery) something to ease the pain of waiting. When it doesn't pan out, they will at least be closer to delivery and won't care so much.

I would be seriously surprised if this was more than wishful thinking or fanboi fantasy. It doesn't seem to make any sense to jack up the price and still not gain any profit margin.

Why would they not also update the M4?

Here's to hoping! The current arrangement doesn't seem to have a lot of mod headroom, so it sure would be welcome... I want to get one late next spring, so that would be quite a present... Not holding my breath though.... By then should also have details on the RS3 to see if it will be a worthy competitor or not - I plan to pick SOMETHING up in Germany next year though!

What the big deal, if you want more power throw a big turbo in the N55 and make your "dreams" come true

The subject title needs changing. This isn't fact at all, and I very much doubt this will be happening.

Putting aside the legitimacy of the source..

I don't see this hurting M4 sales much. The typical M4 buyer wants a leather dash and adjustable suspension, as well as fancy seats. They will not want to wait over a year to get their car and they will turn the car over once the next thing comes out.

So if you picked up one of these new theoretical M2s with S55 and 400 bhp, your first thought is to mod it up to... what? 450? 500?

To each their own, I guess... 370 bhp sounds like plenty to me for the roads and highways. Haven't heard a lot complaining about it being underpowered. But I have heard that it is nicely balanced as it currently stands.

Let's test the logic of this idea. BMW just developed a special version of the N55 for the M2 sold a few thousand and then is going to go through an engine change? Also, they think its a good idea to give the M2 even more hp so it can out perform their performance icons?

I don't think it is likely to see a new engine in the M2 until we see a significant increase in hp in the M3/4 and there is a business case for it. I don't know of any manufacturer who has every done an engine change this early on a car that has a 1-2 year backlog of orders selling for MSRP or above. It makes no business sense. Having said that the guy who started the rumor did a great job of getting us to waste our time on this.

When the M2 gets a new engine it will be based on the B58 modular platform, the S55 will be phased out in a few years as BMW is committed to the modular concept which saves them a ton of money and provides impressive performance. If the rumor was the M2 was getting a tuned version of the B58 I would almost buy that as a possibility.

Lastly we may see an S55 in a limited edition CSL or GTS version of the M2 because that would be the simplest way to get that model done and it wouldn't have to be detuned nor would it infringe on any of the companies cash cows.

This would distort the M3/4 position in the hierarchy of the M models. GM is dealing with this exact issue between the Camaro and Corvette, the gap in performance gets too narrow. This is one reason we will see a mid engine Corvette in the next generation.

Maybe they'll call it a M2 Evolution.

It'd be pretty harsh on current M2 owners though.
Exactly. Hasn't happened for 15+ years and unlikely to start now. But I guess we'll see!

Personally, the power generated by the N55 is more than enough for me and I am perfectly happy with the 365hp and 343 lb-ft.

Not when the 340i with MPPK is putting out the sAme numbers. BMW just don't want to sell the M2

Does anyone know what date the last series (non-M, non M-perf) car is going to be produced with an N55? Has it already passed?

It sounds implausible, but if BMW is shutting down N55 production completely then maybe not.

HP

It's funny that people discuss an extra 40 hp but I doubt many people even use the power that they have under foot. Take the nannies off, put it in sport mode or sport+ mode and hang on. Then ask yourself if and extra 40hp matters. If you say yes you either race or autoX and you are one of the few who pushes the edges. I doubt many drivers of 350GT's, LE1'2 or hellcats have the skill to take the nannies off either, but they have bragging rights while having a bud light.
