An enlightening review from Ars Technica.
TL;DR: they were impressed by the TTRS, and felt disappointed with the RS3.

Read the article (or better yet, drive both). They share the same basic architecture, but they're definitely not the same car; for example, the RS3 is larger and considerably heavier. Also, the RS3's A3 economy car roots are evident. That doesn't mean the RS3 is a bad car - it's just not the world-beater a lot of people were expecting.

Not really, same platform, very different cars.
For example, the VW Touareg and the Posrche Cayenne are on the same platform, but they sure aren't the same car. Same goes for your RS3 - would you be happy if I called it a Jetta? Because by your argument, they're the same car... |

The big difference is interior - The TT family is much more performance focused, so there's less going on, but higher interior build quality and a more driver-focused cockpit. |

There's also a weight difference involved, and the TT gets wider tires all around by default (19x9 is standard at all corners on the US/Canada-spec mk3 TTRS I believe; it was on the mk2 for sure).

And the RS3 "chassis" gets a big stretch for the back seat and trunk, which may help the ride compared to the TTRS, but it certainly takes away some of the handling prowess.
My advice to RS3 4-door sedan buyers: Don't drive the TTRS. |

They won't budge on MSRP either, claiming east coast is getting a small allotment. I find it odd that I can get possibly better pricing on a M3 or M2 than an RS3?! I'm kind of done with my 335i M Perf so cross shopping has become quite an interesting experience with the choices out there...The Civic Type R has 15k mark ups lol!!!

Try to secure an allocation for an M2 (if you don't need 4 doors). The RS3 will be faster in a straight line, that is until you opt for a bigger turbo and tune like a few of us here. As for the fun-to-drive factor, it'll be no contest. I'm awaiting the comparos between the two cars. Guaranteed the M2 will be much more engaging to drive than the Audi that happens to have wider front rubber than rear . I swear Audi engineers these cars to be solely Autobahn missiles. I'm sure the RS3 would be fun driving NJ Rt 55 with no traffic....just be careful of the long sweepers. Don't want to end up in the ditch because of understeer.

Also worth considering - an I6 3L should be > I5 2.5L in terms of absolute tuning potential without going crazy.
There's also the issue of balance to keep in mind... I'm guessing most on this forum haven't driven an I5 let alone lived with one for a few years. The motor literally wants to shake itself to pieces, only through proper balancing does it not fall apart. On the Mk2 TTRS, that means you can't safely change the flywheel outside of stock because it's part of the balancing system. I'm looking forward to the silky smoothness of I6. [sidenote - the smileys on this forum are such a goddamn mess... rolleyes doesn't properly convey the sarcasm usually meant by rolleyes... the shocked/astonished face ( o: but flipped around) goes to "Embarrassment" and doesn't seem right at all either... ugh]

I drove it while I was picking up a qt of oil next door at Porsche. I really liked it, but I don't know if I'd regret getting it over an M2; I still love 6mt + RWD.

It will most definitely hold its value better than any RS model

That'll help with either negotiations or as an alternate option. I need 4 doors I think...With a large car seat in the back and another kiddo on the way, will be tough to justify the M2 unless my wife starts smoking pot and forgets we are expanding the family. ;-)

Ok, I would think the N/A V8 RS5 would be of value. I think I've seen only a couple of them in my lifetime.

Just in case, I drove it respectably I let the car fully warm up and didn't take it past 5k rpm per the break-in procedure. The CA I worked with was Steve. Good luck with your search!
