BMW Engineers: Additional weight? Just add more boost.
In straightforward driving (yes) - Many, love the M2, for feeling nimble.

Am I the only one excited to pick up a slightly used cpo m2 for mid to low 40s once these hit street sometime next year? The original is plenty fast for daily driver duty.

Seems to be a new thing for BMW. Isn't it? I wonder if that would make things any different regarding price changes .
no there isn't... but since we are rev reviewing precedents.. I wonder if the " internal name " of M2 comp simply just becomes "2019 M2" as the vehicle comes to production... then that puts it back in line with some of the prior models that have had major motor changes like the e36 m3 and the M roadster.
But it doesn't seem that the name is just internal now that it's on the M2 logo on the back of the car, at least according to the EVO photos.

Anyway, time will soon tell for sure!

If you want a used M2 then you should be excited. People that already own one might not feel the same way

How will the s55 sound? The m2 sounds way better than m3/m4. Driven them at limerock few years back. If I didn't have my 340 now. I'd be rocking an m2.

IMHO an M2 CSL would be the right opportunity to score a halo status homerun by going full badass with a direct link to the BMW 3.0 CSL past, including a modern interpretation of the integrated bat wing.

Don't worry Gatte, he's an OK guy. However, despite the absolute truth that we are by no means affiliated to BMW or BMW M in any way whatsoever except for being BMW enthusiasts + current/potential customers, he is convinced that we are BMW bots.

@Gatte Artemis
Best two posts in this whole thread. Gatte has given confidence and proven a business case as to why BMW must put a CSL version of M2 in to production as exiting halo M2 from this platform generation - setting the M2 name in stone to attract the next generation of buyers - aka the new M3. Artemis, you've nailed it re: the rear wing design. The current GTS spoiler design is too devisive and BMW need to put some hours in to the design and integrate it better with the sculpture of the rear of the car - pretty much exactly like the vision concept car. Make it happen BMW, please.

The current GTS spoiler design is too decisive ? Divisive? Derisive? Seriously.. I'm not catching your meaning here..

Absolutely agree. Just not sure if BMW will let it happen on this version.

The next iteration of the M2 will incorporate Carbon Fiber in the chassis. In my opinion that would be more CSLesque from the beginning. BMW might hence call this iteration a GTS and not a CSL. That would also allow BMW to put in the existing wing (similar wing to the one on the M2 Racing, Moto GP safety cars & some other cars )

Having said that, I find it hard to believe that BMW did not do anything to reduce the weight on the M2 Competition. It's a big opportunity to just let go and I don't think BMW will just let that go. Whether it will be worthy of the CSL moniker or not is still to be seen.

I really think it will mostly be a GTS rather than a CSL this time. I sincerely hope I am wrong though.

Let's see.

Seriously in the long run I don’t think the current M2 will suffer in holding its value, in the short term yes!!but don’t be surprised 10yrs from now the current M2 is not well sort after. The new M2 competition wiil obviously perform better but I’m sure in the real world on a twisty road 2 good drivers how big a gap will it be??

I know BMW like to spout on about 50/50 weight distribution somehow I don’t see the additional weight from the engine will deliver on that point

Well, they could also consider settling for "M2 CS" if the "L" of "CSL" (= Leichtbau = lightweight construction) would be inappropriate.

Let's see.
. on to the CSL/GTS banter thread...

It sure seems that the GTS moniker is dead based on the comments from Van meel and the intro of the CS.

I love the 4 tier idea of

base model
Comp pack
CS - luxury with 4 seats and track orientation
CSL - performance with 2 seats and track focused

BMW is so muddled right now between their model #s and even their model names though... they have screwed up the 4 series by muddling in gran coupes... the 6 series now moves to 8.. 5GT becomes 6 for no explicable reason... . and they can't fully decide how to name their sports cars lines.... ..

For the M4.... we will make a Comp pack.. a GTS.. a CS... but for the M2... we will make a "competition.. " . but not comp pack.... ? and we will give it an entirely different motor... which we've never done before..

Nice catch
Also to be expected then on future models such as the upcoming M5 Competition.
