Maybe there are thermal or aerodynamic reasons for doing it. It seems unlikely that the width and distance between tips would be the same for the M2 and whatever else this would have been used on.

I'm not an engineer (architect actually) but did they leave room because they don't want to heat up the trunk too much with heat from the exhaust? The battery and electronics are back there too, so maybe that's a reason.

The cats are placed inside the downpipes. You cannot easily see them without removing some protection. MR |

For those of you who would like to know and are guessing. From left to right.
Rear muffler with valves and four end pipes, Center muffler, Two OPF's, Down pipes are only visible for a few centimeters. MR |

From what i see in this pic there are no sensors for the OPFs. so isn't it possible to just delete them with no fault codes coming up ?

This set up is used to make sure that electronics can react when the pressure becomes to high when for instance the OPFs clog up. That could happen. At that moment the engine could go into limp mode to protect the powertrain. Phil_M2 shared with us that his car has been used for a test of about 400 km in which the car did not have the OPFs. In that time on CEL warning was produced by the car and the flow clearly stayed within limits of those sensors. Unfortunately, these are not hard tests stating that you can drive without. Phil's car drove in Germany under normal weather situations. It could be that under other situations CEL warnings can pop up and that is something that needs to be tested properly. I would not remove them until engineers have properly tested this. MR |

I had a phone call during the week. Content is coming soon and then I can share more with you guys. They are now driving around with my car and testing different options. That is the only thing that I can tell you now. More soon!
