I’m a bit confused and concerned that this thread has had multiple people reporting similar issues when as far as I knew, the only known S55 flaw was the crank hub.
I mean we’re talking about an engine that is 10+ years old and was in the M3/4 long before our M2Cs. I thought the consensus was that they’re very reliable short of the crank hub (which is not an issue if you remain stock) Does anyone know if M3/4 owners have been hitting this same issue years ago? I used to feel silly about the fact I got an extended warranty on the engine but now I guess I feel better about it, lol. |

I can't understand how the cause of this issue is deemed to be incorrect torque from the factory when the issue has been known about for so long (since 2016 according to the post above), yet the problem still persists on engines produced right up to 2020.
Further, the problem is not unique to the S55 as this N55 owner has documented the exact same issue: |

This thread has got me kind of spooked. I know it's very specific to the S55 but I just watched a vid where the camshaft issue can also affect the N55 on M2's Can you guys have a listen and let me know what you think? Hopefully I'm just being paranoid... Last edited by 7tune; 07-01-2024 at 12:00 PM.. |

my car just got to the dealer for this same issue, gave them tons of details so it can be resolved quickly. Thankfully I think I caught it early and while still under warranty! Will post updates in this thread as I get them

This thread has me literally popping the hood and listening to my engine every single time I drive it. I truly am disappointed with bmw if this was a known issue and they try to fix as little of them as possible. Every brand has their issues, but this one it seems bmw wants to completely ignore.

I suspect every single S55 and maybe even N55 are affected to some degree. It does not seem to cause problems other than maybe accelerated wear, and I haven't seen that much evidence of that either. Maybe if it gets bad. I wonder if this fix is lasting also.

I only have the numbers previously posted but my dealer ignored me anyway. They ignored me and insisted on replacing the lifters, which happens to require the cam carrier bolts replaced which actually fixes the issue, so they’re convinced it’s the lifters.
