I have driven the X4M40i and apart from the lack of natural sound, the gearbox was the biggest letdown. I found it utterly boring compared to the DCT in the F87. It did not inspire as much confidence as the DCT, the shifts felt much less snappy (even though they might be equally fast) and I felt no urge to shift manually with paddles as I usually do with the DCT. Maybe it was coupled with the lack of sound but I also felt like I had no idea when to shift so I generally just let the transmission do its job. It might be a good transmission but in no way it is an exciting transmission. Actually, it felt almost like a Corolla automatic I had rented for a trip around New Zealand. |

My first experience with a ZF8 was 5-6 years ago in an M5 Comp, and it wasn't too impressive at that time. Slow shift response to paddle inputs, etc. That has changed substantially since that time. At least in M cars, M340/M440. I have no idea about the current SAVs though. For a good idea of on track response, Jackie Ding's videos with his G87 project time attack car are pretty good.

Finally saw one irl. If you are really close to it, you can’t see the bottom half; which is good.
Then there’s this:

I've seen many hereabouts and at the dealership and the black looks the best by far.
What does this say about the composition of body panels against different colors I don't know, just sharing my thoughts...

The kidneys actually work in person; from about 20 ft away, they really are a kidney grill evolution. Because they are pushed forward, it makes the air intakes and scaffolding way less pronounced; visually supporting the kidneys, instead of being the main focus -which is all i can focus on when looking at pictures. The overall shape/stance/presence is actually very nice; feeling like a purpose-built, fast-car shape. I didn’t care for the boxy fenders (see here: https://i.ibb.co/Jr5Rc9Y/PXL-20240305-234542668.jpg) but they are not nearly as abrupt as pictures suggest. The taillights are still a tragedy, but the jet exhaust-looking rear bumper design isn’t as pronounced when you are standing next to the car. In fact, i thought the rear exhaust/spoiler stuck out just enough and was just the right shape to bring a satisfying cohesion to the rear. The long assed boot lid in pictures also translates well in person, adding to the sense of width the car has. The side sills could go either way. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised that a car looks better in person than in pictures. But it is definitely a new generation car, and a departure from the restrained, flowing lines of the f-series.

It all looks like a bad late 90s early 00s body kit to me.
Everything else about it may be amazing, but I can not get over the looks, nor the full digital interior. I’m happy for anyone that enjoys the thing, but it’s not for me. |

All other colors not so much IMHO. If you're a "Trekkie" the interior is sublime IMHO. My car is still the best looking period IMHO. I'll shut up now...

Agreed. when I make the transition, my thought was either red or black for me.

Whenever I walk up to my LBB OG F87, I think 'damn that's a beautiful car'. Not sure I could ever think that with a G87.
I do love my analog gauges too! I don't drive the M2 for bells and whistles. Let's face it, on aesthetics the F87 is as easy win. |

Even most of the reviewers commented on the poor looks. It is definitely unique and probably the best current BMW.
