CS rattling issue
Hey experts,
I have a crazy annoying rattle coming from my cs. At first I thought it might be the bottom of my steering wheel column, but I’m not sure. It sounds more like it’s coming from below the driver side ac vent area. I recorded the following audio clip on the way to work this morning…anyone maybe have a similar issue and recognize it? Any help would be greatly appreciated, it’s driving my OCD nuts. Thanks! https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/dyij0...elw3zk9m4&dl=0 |

Thanks man, it’s driving me to the brink. My local BMW is worthless, I will only bring it in for warranty on this as a last resort 😎 but like everything else, will fight me tooth and nail.

I am lucky to have a very good dealership relationship with the service department and when something weird is coming up with the cars, they always suggest to wait until the regional BMW rep comes to review the issue directly with BMW. While you mention that your dealer is a crapshoot, give it a try and ask the Head of service to book an appointment with the local BMW rep on their next visit to demonstrate the issue and come up with a solution - hopefully. Dealers love warranty work, it is free money so to say! Last resort, walk over to the GM’s office and demand it to be at least looked at the right way!

When are you noticing the rattle? On cold start, when you're giving it gas, etc

Hey, I had a very similar rattle in my car (OG M2) but the parts are the same.
I would first check the plastic trim between the door and the steering column itself. Some of those might be loose, so I would check that they are secured and add foam as needed. The second thing it could be is actually in the driver door itself. There are a lot of cables in there and it’s possible some of the securing points became loose (or a loose bolt that fell into the door), so I would open it up to check those points and (again) add foam or felt tape as necessary. |

Any updates on the noise? If been following along. Have you had any work done in the areas of noise?
It does sound like plastic components. Have you pressed firmly on the dash around the air vent or pressed on the air vent itself? Do the same with the driving light switch and maybe rotate it a couple times. See if pressing on the dash changes the sound. I was also thinking maybe the plastic pieces in the footwell down by the pedals.

I was noticing a rattle that I thought was coming from the footwells of the passenger side and it mostly happened on cold starts after I installed my AA exhaust. Turned out it was the plastic underneath the vent in the cf hood that was rattling on cold starts. Never would've guessed it had I not got out of the car to listen to the rattle

Solved
Hi all,
Sorry for the late reply!! Was not my intention. Everyone has been so awesome and I really appreciate all of the advice. So I ended up isolating it to a plastic piece in the footwell, just past the bottom of the steering column. I took some dynamat I had lying around and was able to sound proof it So far so good! ChiTownM and great tip--I will certainly take your advice down the road. Thanks again everyone. |

Another weird sound issue. Often when I turn on the interior overhead lights, there is a loud pop that comes from the roof liner area. It occurs more frequently than not. Anyone else experience this?

I have noticed one rattle in my car. It's actually coming from the front passenger seat. I think something may be loose under the seat cover. When someone sits there, no noise. When no one is sitting it rattles and if I just press with my hand down it goes away completely. Wondering if maybe it's the heating coil or possibly a clip, etc. any guides on how to remove the seat cover? Was gonna take it to the dealer but don't want to risk them scratching something on the interior trim just trying to take things apart

For about two weeks I was convinced it was the seat or something under it, turned out to not be the case and an easy fix. |
