Single turbo ?
Well after telling myself I wouldn’t do it I’m going to cave in. About $25k into build so I said screw it might as well finish it off. Narrowed it down to 3 options and wanted some opinions if you guys had any.
1. Big boost EFR 8474 Single Turbo 2. Vargas GC 3. Kratos Krass55Bi evo Leaning towards the big boost 8474 as I really want a single turbo. The Vargas is such a great price that it’s hard to not give it a good look. Will probably pass on Kratos but their quality and warranty is unmatched. Not looking for crazy power. Run flex fuel and usually shoot for E50. Im running a little over 600 to the wheel now on full E85 but really want the top end to have more power. |

I would consider the 4N single kit to be of a much higher quality than the Big Boost, Vargas are notorious for being cheap and failing, the Kratos are overpriced and have quality issues. Not tryimg to be negative about your top 3 choices, just pointing out my viewpoint for your careful consideration.

Stock rods? 4N with the BW 8474 for single, Mosselman 65-80 for twins. I went with Kratos Evo's and have no real regrets but they were pricey and I was told by my tuner to cross my fingers and hope they hold up. Been great so far though

Great choice!
Looks like 4N has a bit of a waitlist... Will you be doing anything to the clutch or drivetrain? What's your hp goals? |

I just got my ucp, gonna install tmr. Might eventually do the cdv and ssk kit. For HP looking to get 700wheel on full E85 but will run a E50 mix most of the time. Just want to get more power with some 93 so I’m not ripping thru gas lol.

Typically yes there needs to be supporting upgrades done. What all is needed varies based on the power increase, usage, etc. Can go with something like a drop-in setup for an easy install with a nice power bump without pushing past the limit of the stock internals. Higher flowing injectors, open up the cats, good tuning is about all you need unless you track - might need a lpfp upgrade if you do to prevent lat g induced starvation. From there can go as far as you want - built motors, full fuel system upgrades, all that fun stuff.

Stock engine, FBO. I feel bigger turbos (single or dual) wildly improves daily driving on this car. The stock turbos are so small that they are hitting max boost way too soon causing constant traction issues. Add a small amout of lag and a slower rising boost curve from a bigger/heavier compressor assembly and the car instantly becomes easier to handle IMO. I've had no issues so far but I'm aware of some failures and was even warned by my tuner to cross my fingers if I decide to build the motor and pass the 800whp mark. I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there. Hope this helps. |

Anyone using speedtech’s top mount kit? Are there any other top mount kits out there? It’d be nice to see one that allows retaining the carbon fiber brace, but if not, is there an alternative brace that can be used that fits around the top mount? I’m sure a shop could prob make a custom one at the end of the day.
Is all that is needed to be done engine wise the crank hub up for up to 800 whp or does the motor need to be built? What is involved when going the built motor route?

Is there a single turbo kit that’s truly bolt-on and doesn’t require irreversible modification or cutting so if I wanted to return to stock I could?

Vargas’s top mount single turbo kit apparently lets you keep the carbon brace. Haven’t seen many videos/pics of people adding it tho, maybe there’s more documentation on the M3/M4 forums. I think for the most part none of the other kits like Big Boost, 4N, and Speedtech require any cutting either (besides Speedtech with the exception of the brace because the turbo sits high).
