Fortune Auto Series 500 installed & pics
Oct 2 2021 update:
Hey everybody - thank you very much for all of the advice & input. I went with the 500 series, Swift springs, 8k front/16k rear. I posted some pics at the end of the thread to show the stance. I didn't go too low - I'm old. LOL The build quality is impressive and they look real nice out of the box. Awesome finish. Mind blowing quality. Major bang-for-buckage here & made in the USA!! Thanks again everybody & to all of the threads about spring rates & brands to consider. Couldn't have done it without y'all. Jim Orig post: I've been reading through many threads re: spring rates. Want to say thanks to everyone who has posted some great info & insight. Y'all are fantastic! I've narrowed my choices down to two: BC Racing, DS Series, standard variant (not extreme low), Swift Springs upgrade & default spring rate 7K/mm (~392 lb/in) front, 14K/mm (~784 lb/in) rear. Fortune Auto, based on info I provided them with how I use the car & my goal for the suspension upgrade, recommends their 500 series, Swift Springs with 8K/mm (~448 lb/in) front & 16K/mm (~896 lb/in) rear spring rates. I can also get the 7/14 K/mm combo. I do not know the actual lb/in rates - I just used an online converter to determine those. Both mfrs only show rates in K/mm. Curious to know if any suspension geeks out there can comment on expected ride quality changes. There are a lot of you that seem to really know your stuff on this subject!! OEM ride quality is not as bad as I thought - but it is definitely jittery/bouncy on lousy CT roads. Some are bad enough that I feel the car lose grip/hop a little at times. Appreciate any help/insight on what I can expect with these set ups, which spring rate option you might go with. I am leaning towards the Fortune Auto set up, so it's the spring rate I am most interested in hearing your input about.

I have mcs 1wnr with rear true coilover
Spring rate are 550 front and 450 rear 450 true rear coilover equal around 800 lbs on a standard divorced setup At first i was nervous, but honestly it's very very comfortable, handling is better than stock and comfort is there I'm running them 10 clicks from full soft front and rear in the street and same on track ( 18 clicks total on mcs) The secret is good, high quality dampers, they makes high spring rate ride very good. |

I noticed you went stiffer on the front. Is that a typical set up? I did see in more than few youtube videos folks going stiffer up front - but Im thinking that's more a track-oriented set up (??)
Think I should ask them to tone down the spring rate to 7k/mm front (392 lbs/in) and 14k/mm rear (784 lbs/in)? I do think fortune auto makes high-quality dampers. They're hand-built & dyno tested before they leave their factory. It has a single adjustment that I am pretty sure does both rebound & compression; I wanna say 24 clicks. I am going to be an M2 owner that's DD with occasional track & autocross days. Thanks!! Quote:

Tc kline recommand 350/600 for his f8x coilover setup
He also offer 400/700 for a more track oriented setup Stiffer is not always better, tc kline recommend 350/600 because it offer a lot of grip No matter what brand you choose, be confident about what they recommand you since they usually make some test and know what's better for their setup depending of your goals I'm pretty sure that Around 400/750 as you stated, the ride will be very nice. 500-900 is more track oriented but would be ok in the street. The good thing is you can always change the spring but i know by experience that it's a tough decision, Focus on street performance that can go on track.... you'll be more happy than a track setup that you can use in the street |

In case anyone visits looking for additional information, I wrote Fortune Auto to ask about lowering the spring rate to 6kF/12kR or 7KF/14kR. This was their response (and by the way, they were very responsive & helpful!)
"I think 7kg / 14kg would be the softest I would recommend. 8kg / 16kg is very supple and smooth. This vehicle with those rates is one of the best riding vehicles I have personally been in with the 500 series suspension." The lead time is 4-8 weeks, and then I have to schedule the install. Once I have them on & have driven on some familiar roads, I'll post my thoughts on ride quality & differences with OEM. Can't wait!!

The other important point is how long before rebuilds when comparing brands. Many of the high quality Single tube kits such as JRZ, AST. etc. will need to be rebuilt muct sooner than the Koni's. I've run AST's, JRZ's, Ohlin's and TC's. The Ohlin's and the Koni's in my experience lasted 2-3x's longer between rebuilds. Yanking shocks and shipping them out to be revalved/rebuilt is a PITA.

I ran MCS on my Z4MC and E92M3 and was very happy with them. I agree completely that quality dampers make a huge difference in ride. |

Like instead of running 1300 lbs rear divorced, you can do around 750 rear coilover setup In my case I simply buy my kit slightly used and it was that so why not. But in the end it doesn't make any difference |

I’m on fortune auto 500 with the default rates and the car rides much better than stock. Driving around town is a night and day difference. Highly recommend them.

Thanks for checking out the thread and replyin! Really appreciate it! Can I ask if you lowered your height or you leave that alone? Did you install yourself or have it done & aligned later? (Tough to install, if you did it?)

I did lower it about 1.5 inch all the way around. After switching to 18s I wanted to get rid of the wheel gap. I had it installed at a shop and had them do an alignment.

I went with 672 / 1008 on MCS 2WNR based on MCS recommendations (even 1 step softer than what they recommended). We'll see how this turns out.
It is a very track focused car but I've heard that slightly softer can be better so I'll probably end up experimenting a bit once the car is stable and I'm comfortable with the setup.

Just an FYI - I am 2 weeks into the 4-8 week lead time that was in effect when I placed my order. Don't want you thinking I forgot about ya if I go silent for a while.

Coilovers arrived!
Installation 9/28-29. I'll post pics after install. Excited to see the gap shrink & especially to feel the ride.
In case you're curious on how long they took - they arrived at week 7.

Just to weigh in here:
I've been tracking with swift 80/100 (448/560) and I will be increasing the rate to 120/140 (672/784) soon to reduce the amount of body roll. If this is too much I'll revert to (560/672) Im using mcs 2way remote with rear coil over. No downforce other than lightweight performance lip. I don't really care about street compliance as much as I used to; the car is miserable on the 405 freeway no matter what you do lol.

I have the Gen 7 500 series 8K/16K & yep - Swift springs. Just picked it up today after install. The shop lowered me about 1/2" - perfect. What I can say about the ride quality - HUGE difference, night and day. As F/A said, the ride is supple & smooth, but at the same time it's tight. It is very, very noticeable. Bumps in the road feel like "once & done" vs the stock jitters. The car feels really planted too. My OEM suspension had 47K miles on it, as an FYI. This is just my preliminary thoughts - haven't taken it out on known rough roads I frequently have to travel on. Gonna go for a spin later. I'll post pics of the lowered car when the sun comes out. Now more importantly, while the shop had the car, I had them do 3 dyno pulls to check performance, see about a retune. They said no need to; the tune on the car is great. Bootmod3, Cary Jordan (prior owner had it done). I have FMIC, sport cat downpipe, metal charge/intake pipes (again - thanks prior owner!) #1) 401 T/360 HP #2) 407 T/357 HP #3) 398 T/332 HP Overall, a great day was had by all. heh heh

Not going to lie those numbers seem kinda low. I believe ThicWhips made 407whp on a bm3 OTS map. Either way great write up on the coils I can't wait to grab mine! |
