Front Sway Bar Install Guide

Like a few others here, I ordered an M2 CS Racing front sway bar and got around to installing it this past weekend. It's still amusing to me that the CSR front sway bar is cheaper than pretty much any aftermarket bar, and it really does seem to be the same as the H&R 30mm F8x front sway bar. Doing a front sway bar install is pretty easy on the M2/3/4 since the bar is mounted under the subframe, unlike on the regular 2/3/4 where you have to drop the front subframe because the bar is on top of it.

For even greater cost savings, it's possible to buy a used M3/M4 front bar from a breakers, as it's the same part as the CS.

Edit: Actually no. The CS uses the M4 front sway bar - the CSR uses something else.

Farkle, now you've had it on the car for a few months, what changes have you noticed in the handling?

The bar does its job and is noticeable when going from a base car to this. I kind of wonder if it's not matching up as well with the Ohlins I just put on since those have such a high front spring rate relative to the rear (non flat ride).

I'm fortunate that the M2 isn't my daily driver, or it'd be A LOT dirtier!

Well, BMW appear to offer three springs for the front of the M2 CSR, so how do they relate to the rates of the ones you've fitted? Part numbers below:

31308416815 - 140-60-180
31337766685 - 140-60-200
31308431823 - 140-60-220

Which number is the spring rate is an interesting one as 140 works out as 800 lbs/in, 60 is 340lbs/in while 180-220 comes in at 1020 lbs/in to 1250 lbs/in. Stock spring rates are 218 lbs/in

Wow, that is very hard setup… all of them.

140mm free lenght, 60mm inner diameter, 180-220 N/mm spring rate

Nitron R1 uses front 140 N/mm softer, 160 N/mm harder setup for stock M2 Comp weight.

KW Clubsport uses 70 N/mm for stock M2 Comp weight.

My AST 5300 uses 130 N/mm front for stock M2 Comp weight.

Are there also rear spring rates? I know there is real coilover but that is the same with Nitron and AST which I have.

And to your question, for street 70-100 N/mm, for track 130-160 N/mm…. That's what I would fit there, but you need also right damper for that spring rates.

There appear to be 6 options on the rear:
33508321018 - 170-60-170
33508321019 - 170-60-180
33508322138 - 170-60-190
33508342780 - 170-60-200
33508342781 - 170-60-210
33508342782 - 170-60-220

All - as you say - for a rear coilover.

Thanks

I had 80 N/mm rear and went for harder track setup with 120 N/mm, but this is crazy hard 😁

Btw, Nitron has 110-130 N/mm as far as I know

KW Clubsport is not real coilover at rear, so makes no sence to post it here

The CSR default rates are the 200N/mm front and 190N/mm rear.

Yep. Which are listed in the above. But that's still over 1100lbs/in front - 1000lbs/in rear against stock rates of 218 lb/in front and 528 - 681lbs/in rear (noting the stock springs are separate and further inboard, so act as if they are even softer). So, a front bar designed for that is bound to dominate - as you mention - on anything designed for road use. Yes?

At the moment I am also using my M2C as a weekend car but seems te be dirtier. Do you actually occasionally wash your undercarriage?

I'm far too lazy to wash the underside!

Farkle, how confident are you on the dimensions and weight of the stock front bar mentioned in the video?

I've yet to get the scales out and weigh it, but the centre section of the bar used on the M2CS is 24.4mm. So it might actually be softer than the stock bar.

Updates on how much it weighs once I locate my scales...

Okay, so the stock front bar used on the M2CS appears to weigh 3.7kg so apparently no difference in weight - but that's using bathroom scales,

Edit: But, the smaller diameter centre section - in addition to being 0.4mm smaller diameter than the stock M2/M2C bar - is a smaller diameter for quite a bit longer.

I'll see how if feels on the drive to work tomorrow using the twisty route, but the initial shakedown drive suggested the rear end is more mobile under power in longer bends (even with all the electronic nanny still on...)
