I live in a small ski resort town with snow on the ground six months of the year. My house is on top of a 100ft long, very steep driveway. I would definitively replace my M240 with an M2 if it was available with xDrive.

I suppose I could move...
Well, I too think adding xDrive to the G87 M2 would be a good move. I "think" the xDrive is an option the newer M cars makes sense. And besides, the M5 MxDrive has a mode for RWD only. BMW needs to consider things that will make this car enticing for many types of drivers, not just "hard core" enthusiast. There are a lot of people who purchase these cars that support the genre of M cars who are not "hard core" enthusiast. Without those people, the M genre could not support itself with only "Hard Core Enthusiast". Just my opinion.

I had 5 Audi S4's and RS4's in my 20's and early 30's until they killed the manual transmission. I made the switch to the F80 in 2016 and at the age of 35 it was my first "non quattro" car.
I happen to truly love RWD now. I am on my 2nd F80 (i have an M3 CS) and am getting the G80 in RWD 6MT. I think AWD is totally overrated. I run Michelin Alpins from November to early April and I'm an avid skier. I have no issues getting to the top of a mountain in Maine under any conditions. That's just my experience.
RWD with snow tires outperforms AWD with all seasons and is comparable in functionality to an AWD with snow tires.
Sorry, I respectfully disagree with that. I have done it all. Trust me, snow tries on AWD is better than on RWD w/snows. It depend more on the type of AWD you have as well.

"Comparable" is probably the wrong word, you're right. You'll get where you need to go on blizzaks whether it's RWD or AWD is my point.

A front wheel drive biased Audi does a lot more than a real wheel drive biased F90.

This thing would only really need M XDR if it's coming out of the factory 510+ hp but that's not happening. Maybe they'll do the same thing with RWD and M XDR as options. 6MT and 8HP76 (or better?) would honestly be distinct enough to get one of each. I'd assume BMW wants this car to apply to most, if not all, enthusiasts. G series M3 and M4 might be looked at as M5's little cousins while M2 is the true agile driving thriller. Gotta test drive em all but M2 I'm genuinely excited for knowing that it's on the right track looks wise.

True. Also, RWD w/studded snows aren't that bad.

I figured I'd go for the delusional wish list

With 3 bimmers in the household I'm desperately hoping for an inspirational product offering along the aforementioned lines...

The future for BMW enthusiasts really relies on this car. I'm ok even if it just comes with a beefed up B58.

I think because the 2 series gets awd and the m3 and m4 get it, they all use the same torque converter transmission now, and its competitors have it, it's likely the new m2 will have it as an option at some point.

Sure one of those lurks around the house.
But I stubbornly hope for BMW to regain some of its old glory and re-inject their cars with feel and passion once again. Lifeless and transactional performance is for the uninitiated!

A classic hood line that connects with the hopefully normal-sized kidney grills.

Let me translate that for you in BMW M petrolhead speak: time for BMW M to man up, from Grille80/82 to Grand87.

Best ///M I've ever driven. I settled for the E92. But why can't the new M2 return to some of those characteristics?

I'll agree with you on the weight and CF roof, but the rest I'm happy with.

Rear end of the outgoing F87 is horrible. They really made the front beautiful with the M2C but I could never get used to the rear of the old 2 series with those vertical reflectors.

For me, I'll stick with my incoming G80 to have 4 doors and a manual but, if the G87 ends up being the last 6MT BMW ever makes, I will buy one and keep it forever (or until they outlaw gasoline sales).
I don't have ugly vertical reflectors or an ugly cow udder! The reflector inserts and painting the muffler are some of the easiest modifications to do.
Looks like the lower diffuser may now be integrated with the bumper.

The M2 is the last true drivers car BMW make & it's barely clinging on to that, for gods sake focus on what makes it the success it is, which is the dynamics. Not the bloody grill or entertainment system or headlight/tail light design or other such trivial rubbish.
I've no doubt the looks & inclusions will be just fine, the major concerns must be changes to what makes the M2 an M2 such as additional mass, drivetrain options, steering feel etc. If you can't see that your looking at the wrong car.
