Over on the e9X m3 boards some people have had this issue, or yellowing. Apparently it's not that difficult to fix if a body shop knows what they are doing with carbon, but most shops won't touch it because they don't have any experience with it. There are example in that part of the forum of it being fixed and looking perfect. The only body shops willing to do it right for you could be very far away, and that would suck.

What good is the opinion if there's no factual support behind it? It's baseless. We know that build has little to do with the roof issues. Some old cars never experienced issues at all while newer cars did. Some cars that spent their lives outdoors didn't crack or yellow. Some garage queens experienced issues within the first 6 months. There was never any rhyme or reason to why some roofs cracked, peeled or yellowed. This has been an issue ever since the E9X. The roof defect was hit or miss, just like the cracking radio buttons in the F-Series or the peeling steering wheels.

Agreed, this is a bold post and demonstrates the support the forum has for the members. This should also help owners down the road if documentation is needed to support that BMW was aware of the issue and being a factory defect.

It is good to not be hiding the issue, however I'm curious to see how many customer cars are seeing this. It seems so far to be mostly isolated to press cars.

Unfortunate and embarrassing, but not a deal breaker.
Is 1x1 supposed to be more rigid than 2x2?

It's worth noting that the e46 M3 CSL carbon fibre roof never had any issues - at least none that I ever heard of - and that car is almost 20 years old. So did cf quality go down the drain over the years? - One would assume it should be the opposite.

So maybe the lesson learned here for all people with CF roofs is to wrap it. Clear vinyl for M3/4 and smoked version for M2 CS to reduce the visible imperfections.
It’s annoying on the M2, but I wouldn’t let that stop me from buying the car.

painted carbon panels have tons of imperfections in them but they are painted over. it's typically a steep upcharge to get your carbon options unpainted for the very reason is they have to try harder to make them blemish free.
if it is indeed press cars or "preproduction" models then perhaps they just "got a roof on the car" or maybe the original plan was a painted carbon roof.....or maybe they figured out a better process later in production. or maybe it's too early to tell. I'll definitely be spending several hours in the sun with a magnifying glass inspecting my roof when it comes in. |

When I get a F1 car, then I'll omit the moonroof for actual, meaningful, "weight reduction," than pay 85k for a half-baked, defective design.. But that's just me.. 🤷🏻 |

This should have nothing to do with first model.
BMW has been making CF roofs for over a decade....there is definitely something really bad about it. I can see that something went wrong in production, but what happened to quality assurance team? They inspect body/paint imperfections and how come they didn't catch it. |
