Removing Track Rubber
Spent this morning trying to remove as much track rubber from white M2 after several track days. Was wondering what others have used and found to be the best for this tedious job. I find it hardest to remove from front and rear bumper and around the protective plastic film around the hips. Have been using tar and bug remover, but there must be other products.

Yup, the Griots product that DrKevM5 linked works really well for cleaning up the rubber marks. I've also tried bug & tar removers before with a bit of success but the Griots product makes much easier work, especially on the protective film in front of the rear wheel arches (which was always what I found most difficult to clean).

Isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber (recommended by my PPF installer). Don't forget to reach under the side skirts!

I also always have a bit of claybar handy that I use to remove stubborn shit from the car while I wash it.

Found a prior thread in which you said you removed Protective Film on Quarter Panel. What procedure did you use. Mine is yellowing and it is a pain in the ass to remove deeply embedded rubber from.

I use Optimum No Rinse for quick detailing and washing, but find it pretty ineffective on rubber marks compared to dedicated solutions.
Trying a bunch of APCs and other cleaners, Mother's R3 works the best for getting rid of rubber marks. The one thing you need watch out for though, is that if you use it on plastic surfaces (like clear bra) then you need to follow up with some type of APC after to clean up the residual Mother's R3 or it slightly melts/discolors the plastic it was used on. It probably won't be visible directly looking at it, but off-angle (like what you'd use to see paint swirls) it'll look a bit discolored.

Collinite 325 Cleaner wax. Doesn't require a workout, a light touch gets all of the marks off and waxes at the same time.
Collinite 845 is also a great product that many are not familiar with. Don't be off-put by the '60's packaging.

Am I the only one who thinks ... removing Other People's Rubber ... why? Streaks of Honor.
Just curious. Asking for a friend... not really.

I guess some of us still like having a clean street car for the occasional time I actually use her on the street. But it does make me question why I just didn't get a real track car that would be faster and cost less as well.

I'm very particular about my paint...I have always had really good results cleaning the car like normal, and then going over the rubber spots with the same wax/sealant I normally use on the car (Ammo Skin in my case). I don't have PPF or ceramic coating.
I found the idea here he starts talking about it at the 4:30 mark I've never had to heat it up like he does in the video, and I've never had to use more than normal pressure. I used a foam applicator pad, instead of microfiber like he does. |
