Oh how I loved my ND RF Miata (especially the Recaro seats). Until someone merged into my lane without looking . So I got the M2 as its replacement.
It's simple (and as many stated on here): Miata = Fun all that time at lows speeds, loves being abused without major consequences, and very cheap to own. One of the best OEM Shifter\manual transmission (although the 2016 and some 2017 had exploding transmission issues). An absolute blast and easy to drive at the race track. M2 = Very fun to drive, but most times, find myself having to go over the speed limit to enjoy myself. Haven't tracked her yet, but I hear that's where the M2 really shines! I concur. My old Miata got a ton more attention than the BMW does. Most non-car people think its some type of exotic car. Last edited by StarMan; 04-20-2020 at 02:58 PM.. |

I don't know why I just saw this thread now, but I was pretty much in the same boat as the OP, pretty gung ho on getting an ND RF, until I test drove one with with my wife, who had to hold my cell phone and my wallet during the test drive. Sure it sounds like no big deal, but having to do that every time driving the car was going to get pretty old quickly. If they just managed to make door pockets big enough to hold a cell phone and a wallet, I would probably be in the ND rather than the M2.

If you want a car as light as the ND then there are compromises :-). I have both the ND and a 2020 M2C. I can auto X the RF but not track it. I was hoping someone could fit a roll bar in it but nope! So I'll sell this one in a year or two then get a soft top and mount a Hard Dog bar. Having both these cars is the berries....get one

Not an ND but I have an '01 NB with 88K miles. I bought it right after I sold my M4 to fill the gap while I was waiting for my M2C. When I bought it, my original plan was to sell it when my M2C arrived but never happened. Many people consider it as cheap POS but I absolutely love it. I used to think Miatas were overrated but that changed quickly. It's such a fun car and it has an amazing MT (miles better than any manual BMW I've owned or driven). Sold my M2C a few months ago but still have the NB. Hopefully I will replace it with an ND2 at some point.

Having owned 2 Miata/MX5(both Manual) and 1 135i(Manual) is a big factor why I baught my M2 DCT, the BMW M/T feel spongy and innacurate.

The feeling of my modded NA miata (long gone) is what I'm trying to find in my M2 purchase. The more it was pushed the more comfortable it became. It seemed to like being pushed hard non stop.

Until you mod it with a UCP, Auto Solutions SSK and a weighted shift knob. Then all is well in the world

I've owned both (and also an NC2 Miata). I traded in for the M2C because for me, never having owned a fast car before was something I needed to explore. I don't regret this decision, I love the M2C. I'll get another Miata at some point down the road but the BMW was preferable to me as a daily (3hrs round trip commute).

I had a NC3 prior to my M2C. The NC3 is so much fun for the money. It will also teach you how to become a better driver. It really sharpened my ability to carry momentum at the track.
I think others covered it well: it depends what you're looking for. I think at the surface level these seem like 2 totally opposite cars but it makes sense to me to cross shop. They're really enthusiast cars at their core. For me, the M2C is my obvious choice and I'm happy because of it. That said, I do plan to get another Miata at some point, this time I'm keeping both though.
