M2 Owner - Considering buying a 1M

Hello all,

i have owned my M2 now 3 years, spent another 25,000 euros customising it and i won't be selling, i am however considering putting money into a car /investment i guess i will buy an apartment and garage to rent out too, with the car i am not expecting a massive return its more putting my money somewhere to hold for a while and occasionally take it out for a drive who knows maybe keep it, its done 25k km its on its original tires from 2012 and is in valencia orange.

i have a good chance to buy a 1M at a good price and which evidently hasn't been abused, i have seen rave reviews about how its the best car BMW made for a long time but i'd prefer an owners perspective i guess? so if anyone here has any experience or has owned one please get in touch or share you view here

all feedback will be helpful.

thanks

K

Hi krizze, I haven't drive a n55 m2, but i gave m2c a good test drive.
I wrote some driving impression between 1m and m2c. It's pretty long tho...
It might not be exactly what ur looking for, but I hope it helps.

If you plan on tracking alot the m2 is significantly better, especially when it comes to high g-force oiling concerns, because the 1m just has a standard N54 oil sump with no baffles or secondary oil pump to push oil to the back of the pan under braking.

Here are some of my thoughts on the two cars. Very different. I can promise you, the 1M will put a smile on your face

Yeah I love the 1m too, plus it holds its value better (aka doesn't loose value).

But the 1m just isn't as capable on the track as the m2 and it's hard to make it as capable since the s55 oiling parts arent bolt on for the 1m, and are standard on the m2.

I doubt many people are buying a 1M to track it. I'm sure some do, but a M2C will just crush it on the track - and as noted, lots of stuff you can do to a M2C to make it even better (M2 is much more limited obviously).

Short story, I think a very small population of BMW owners take their cars to the track and if you are interested in doing that, save your money, get a 135 and mod the crap out of it.

Yeah true, it's unfortunate but true.

The 135i would still suffer from the same issue every n54 has, which is oiling and it's not easily solvable. So I would much rather have an E46 m3 over a 135i.

I was fortunate enough to pick up a 1M from Spartenburg back in the day. I fully understood at the time I had something pretty special. Didn't realize until it came time to sell how valuable they would become though. I drove approx 42 thousand miles in three years and sold the car for a couple grand less than what I bought if for new. Best ROI on a brand new car I've ever experienced.

A big part of why they are so valuable is because they are so stinking fun to drive and they didn't make many. It's unfortunate though. They are a blast to drive and that makes them valuable. They are now valuable so people don't want to drive them.

From an investment standpoint I get it. If you are looking for a pretty safe harbor for some money that you can occasionally take out and enjoy the 1M seems like an easy choice. I don't see their values ever depreciating.

I have both. Did a Euro Pick up of a new 1M and got a new 2017 M2 Perf Ed. Still have both. I drive the M2 way more because it's more fun. My 1M is 100% stock and my M2 as a Performance Edition car has BMW Perf exhaust. Both are manual and I'd say for the money, keep the M2!

Same as my 1M. My advise, put your money in the stock market and drive the M2. Wish I had done that. I paid $47k for my 1M and I doubt I could get $55k for it with 12,000 miles on it. Cars as investments are a generational game. If you have 50 years or a grand kid to pass it to it might work out but still not as good as even a marginal mutual fund.

Of course! Best time to buy. Buy stock in companies heavy in assets and those that had been paying good dividends!
Besides, who in their right mind would buy a car in this situation(me, oh me!)

I'm aware of how it works but many markets are very unpredictable at the moment.

I enjoyed my M2*, but never ever considered it more fun than the 1M. You might be in the minority there.

*ok, I did not enjoy the ride, the massive deadspot on center, and the rev matching.

Well, I'm also the Dumb ass that sold his e30 M3 because I didn't enjoy as much as most kool aid drinking Lugerheads thought I should. I'm more of a driver and less of a collector. The Perf exhaust on my M2 sounds tons better then 1M and the suspension handles better.
Please don't be the guy that tells me to "sell it then to someone who appreciates it". I like the car very much, I just like my M2 a bit more to drive as a daily.

For me I don't buy cars for resale value or as an investment, I buy them to drive, modify and enjoy them. So when, not if, I buy my 1m it's going to get modded like crazy and it's going to get driven.

Please don't be what guy? My 1M has 5,001 miles and is covered in my garage right now. Be careful about who you assume is "that guy"

and - you said "more fun" - however, "daily driver?" well, that's a different story. I've written many times that the M2 is a much better daily driver. But - to me - it was never more fun on the streets. But that's me.

That "don't be that guy" was really addressed to others that own neither a 1M or a M2. I assumed the direct opposite in your case. Figured to each their own. That's why they make hundreds of different car models. I just get a lot of guys that have never owned a (fill in this space with whatever car) saying why in the world did you sell it.
