Yeah, seems odd no one made a buzz about it.

I agree though, odd it's the first time hearing of anyone cracking it...

No clarification is needed when you have F80s and F82 there. We clearly didn't read it the same then.

so which is it? does AA have the capacity to tune the S55 over OBD without taking out the DME, or not?

if so, it might be the way to go for me. Tired of waiting for BM3 to get this done...

The answer is YES! We have gotten past bmw'ss newest security patch and the software is working flawlessly though obd2.
Evidently they have it figured out....

Thats awesome news.

If AA broke the code themselves, congrats...

But most likely we will hear that BM3 and others will also be posting that they too have the ability to tune thru the OBD port as well.

Either way I'm happy because I was about to drive 8 hrs round trip to have my DME bench unlocked then tuned.

I don't think AA has "unlocked the latest ISTEP version yet.

My Q & A with BM3?

To our knowledge no one has it resolved. They are most likely unlocking with a bench tool first.

Good day.

I see that Active Autowerkes is claiming they can tune now thru the port on the locked S55 DME's.

Are you also now able to do so?

TIA,

What does the ability to flash the DME have to do with flashing it via the OBD port?

I've flashed back to stock and re-locked my DME so now I just have to take in my car for service.

Any advice on making it absolutely clear that I do not want the DME to be updated? Not sure if they're the best at following instructions.

I told them I had to have the car back in the hour / ASAP and was going to wait for it. If they say it needs updates that will take (several) hours, just say not today you'll have to do that next time...

Yeah I've told them I'll be waiting for it so that should help.

Probably the last service I'm getting through BMW anyways as I will be installing VRSF DPs and chargepipe, AA midpipe as soon as the service is done lol

When I went in for my last service I asked my advisor what they planned to do to my car. He did not mention an update so I asked him if they'd update any firmware in the car. He said that if it was not on the order that was in front of him then it's not getting done.

Any updates on this? I may just go AA tune if they have a solution for the obd2 bootloader lock down.

I suspect that they are bench unlocking the newer DMEs. Otherwise it would be front page news in the tuner community. Ask them.

I might purchase a 2020 M2 competition today. I’ve been reading through this thread but still a bit confused.

Is bootmod3 available to flash on the 2020 M2 Comp? Their website says it is but I see all this talk about encryption and locked DME.

Can someone explain in a nutshell what’s going on?

Much appreciated.

The DME is locked. You can still use Bootmod3, but you have to remove your ECU to have it unlocked. This is what they are referring to as a "bench unlock" as opposed to just plugging the car into a laptop and doing a ""OBD flash".

EDIT: The ECU is under your intake manifold so it's kind of annoying or beyond some people's technical skills.

Thanks. Is anyone working on a solution for having a tune flashed easily via OBD?

Also, what do you do once the ECU is removed?

Yes, they are all working on it. It's money lost for them and doesn't just affect this particular car.

Once removed it has to be shipped to a shop to do the unlocking, shipped back, then re installed. Or if you're lucky, you can take it to a shop and they just do it all on the spot.

Yeah unfortunately it's rare shops know how or are capable to bench flash our cars. Something about shipping my DME off just doesn't sit well. Stock blows...

agreed. for me it's that I don't want to tear into a brand new car when I don't have to.

Unfortunately the Boodmod site is very coy about this and doesn't disclose the newer M2C encryption issues. Repeatedly touting the "no need to bench flash" which is patently untrue for the newer models. As much as I want their tune the lack of clarity / disclosure is unsettling. And yes I've made them aware of this more than once and it is just ignored.
