Swapped over the 28 pin NXP chip which has the vehicle data over to the new key, works great.
Great mod. I had this done a couple years ago using this thread: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1331334

Wasn't a DIY for me however, I shipped my key out to China to have it done. Glad there's more public knowledge surrounding this conversion now if people want to have it done locally or do it themselves.

Also, fun fact: bmw WILL change the battery on one of these for free if it dies, no questions asked. Ask me how I know, lol.

So I guess a couple of questions:

1) how did you get the new / donor key
2) does the 'new' key still provide the required data when dropped into the dealers key reader

I got the new key from ebay (link below), and i'm not 100% sure since i have not been to the dealer lately. The chip houses the vehicle data so i don't see why it wouldn't work. I also plan to take my spare when i do take it in, they don't need to know about this one.

You like?

Would you recommend?

Looking for a good polish for a "full-time" outdoor car.

TIA--

Yes but I just got the cleaning kit, not actual polish. I just got this M2, pre-owned 17' but looks brand new, I'm pretty sure the previous owner had it ceramic coated (in addition. To expel on front and sides)

It works flawlessly at the dealer. I've been using mine for quite some time (years) and no issues what so ever. No need to use the spare. Also had the physical key cut so it's as legit as you can get

One more question, in the video, the guy removing and replacing the chip seems to have some top of the line equipment, the circuit card vice and the soldering station. Is that required or can it be done with more basic equipment? The guy in the video didn't seem to be wearing a static discharge strap but maybe his whole set up is grounded.

He's using a rework station which can be picked up fairly cheaply.

I did'nt wanna half ass it so i grabbed a cheapo hot air station off amazon, and i had an iron already. It was an added expense but worked out great.

Heads up that it is generally not recommended to post a photo of your keys teeth on the internet. Not sure how easy it would be with these keys but sometimes it's possible to have a copy of a key made with only a photo.

Today I installed the factory amplifier splash guard (#:65152715205) I bought recently. It's been installed in cars since spring 2019, so earlier car's owners should install it to prevent water getting to the amp causing it to die. Its a cheap but working solution.

Curious how this would work. It looks like water would just flow off of this onto the amplifier. Or is it the tape over the vent that keeps out water?

I appreciate the concern but:

1. This car is not my daily driver so it's never left outside in public for very long.
2. It's stored indoors.
3. The metal key will only get you inside of the car. It can't start it or access the iDrive system or garage openers or anything important.
4. There's nothing of value or importance inside of the car.
5. If they'd be willing to break into a secure garage to get to it they'd probably also be willing to break a car window. Having or not having the skeleton key won't stop them at that point.
6. The address registered to my plate on the car may or may not actually be where the car is stored.
7. I keep my keys in a locked metal box and in a separate location from where the car is kept so they can't use a sniffer tool to start it even if they do manage to find out where I keep the car and/or the keys.

So yeah...really not too worried. If anything I've taken more precautions than the average person.

Very easy, plug and play with trim tools, a little cringe worthy with how tight the snaps are. The replacement parts with show you wear to lift from.
You'll need a torque but for the center console electronic that's all though all of 15 min

There is not much water gets into, so it wont flow, just droplets. But it's enough for the amp to get into through the opening on the case.
Yeah, i went to overkill mode with the tape.

Thanks, I already replaced my amp.through warranty. I will be getting this soon to protect my current amp.
