2017 M2 - Potential issues and fuel economy
There is a pristine looking M2 in my area with low miles, single owner, clear carfax.
Is the crank hub an issue for this motor? Any key things to immediately check/replace if I buy this? And the primary thing holding me back from buying an M2 is the fuel economy. For those that daily their M2 and do 75-100 highway miles a day, what is your fuel economy like? Currently get 31 or so and I realize I will not get that in the M2, but trying to get a realistic estimate. I'm hoping to avoid filling the tank every other day. Technically yes, but not really. It's true that the N54, N55 and S55 all have this potential flaw but I have yet to read about an N55 M2 spinning a hub. It's only older high horsepower N cars and the occasional S that it happens to. If you're not tuning then I wouldn't think twice about it. It's way way way more of an M2C concern.
Not particularly. These are great cars and I've had few (if any) problems with mine over the past 3 years. As long as you don't mind stiff suspension and a louder than normal exhaust you will love it as a DD. Quote:

The N55 is pretty damn reliable in general - I've owned four of them at one point or another. If your not tuning, then the crank hub is pretty much a non issue.
I have MT and average 24 mpg combined city and highway when I daily drive. On the highway I get about 29 mpg. On weekends, my mpg goes down a bit. |

Gas mileage not an issue for me. It's not great and didn't expect it to be great. Only wish the gas tank was bigger. |

I'm not aware of this happening on a single n55 M2. I know it can happen, but as far as I know it's never happened yet, so I wouldn't let it hold anyone back from buying one.

While you may have heard of ringland failure on the boxers, and everyone talks about it like it is guaranteed to happen to every Subaru, I can count on one hand the amount of people I know who have experienced said failure. Compared to the THOUSANDS of Subarus on the streets, it is an insanely low percentage. Same can be said for the crank hub. AFAIK, the crank hub is only on the S55, so an OG M2 with the N55 shouldn't have the issue. I could be wrong, but I am fairly certain the N55 has a different crank hub design. |

Good point, I never bothered with that valve spring TSB and I am running strong at nearly 180k miles.
@DarthFader, are you serious about the 29mpg? Can anyone else weigh in on their highway MPG? I can live with 29, but not 22. It sounds like a small difference but driving 500 miles a week for work, it adds up. |

My electric car is completely paid for by the fuel costs I save not driving my M as a daily.
And it totally offsets my carbon footprint. You will absolutely love the M2.

I've done several 150-200 mile road trips in mine and saw 27-29 mpg. It usually sits in the low 20's for a mix of shorter trips and spirited drives.

I commute mine a mix of city and highway, about 40 miles round trip per day. I’m pretty heavy on throttle and I get 21miles per us gallon. I can get better but I like to be a bit spiritedwhen I commute.

i get about 28mpg highway 6mt...if you want better mpg get a m235i...the m2 widebody causes a lot of aero drag...i got 36mpg in my buddies 8spd auto m235i..same engine.
the crank hub is more of a s55 issue..i havent heard about it on the n55

I'd love to hear the details. Which electric car? How much do you save by purchasing electricity instead of gasoline? You must drive A LOT of miles.

I try not to drive mine to work often, because it is ALL highway and boring. But cruising arond 80, and doing a lot of "quick accelerations" I easily get 22. If I weren't driving like a hoon, I could surely get 25+. 29 doesn't sound like too much of a stretch. Just gotta have a light foot.

Does the DCT (with 7 gears) get better mileage than the manual?
Mine is a manual, I average around 22 MPG (or less) but I think for purely highway travels I'm up in the upper 20s. For a DD, it would be bit loud for me, but I'm old and intolerant.

I would think so. Fairly certain that 1-3 in the DCT are shorter, but by 6th they are dead even. The 7th gear is longer than our 6th, therefore lower revs. If I recall correctly, it's not a drastic RPM drop on the highway, but it is something.
