Never activated - and won't, unless its completely free

I hear you loud and clear. It appears BMW will NOT offer Apple CarPlay feature for iDrive 6 owners for free, if they have never paid for it in the past.

The only option might be aftermarket coding service. Unless someone knows how to activate in 'Expert' mode in BimmerCode or something.

Where you getting this from? Why wouldn't they just make it free for everyone?

Thanks to kubax86 I now have full screen CarPlay working:-) Process was very simple and worked first time.

I used a Belkin/Apple USB-C ethernet adapter with a MacBook Pro and VMWare Fusion. Windows 7 didn't recognise the adapter so I used a fresh Windows 10 install.

Does this work in the Apple / Mac ecosystem with the right adaptor?

I hate Microsoft and don't do Bootcamp.

Wi-Fi Hotspot + Apple CarPlay - Simultaneous Connection?

Hey guys,

Collected my M2C MY19 the other week, so am steadily finding time to play with the lates iDrive (hell of a difference from my F10 M5's iDrive!)

I decided to register and enable the Wi-Fi hotspot today, taking advantage of the 1mth free trial with T-Mobile (Deutsch Telekom) here in the UK.

Registration went ok eventually....

(a tip for EU users, the Country Selection at the top of the T-Mobile page never seemed to change the displayed flag from the German flag to the Union Flag, despite trying Chrome, Safari, FF....if you persevere regardless, you'll complete your personal details as part of the registration, but it WILL error, saying that the address you entered differs from the initial country you set. The only way around it that I could see (despite calling their helpline in Germany) was to edit the URL from /de/..... to /gb ....there's obviously a coding issue on this page. After that it went through fine.)

....and I went off into the car, followed the instructions to navigate to Connected Devices, and did the necessary to pair my phone (iPhone 11 Pro Max running iOS13.3)

HOWEVER....CarPlay then wouldn't launch in iDrive. I did see some switching between the new SSID for the Wi-Fi hotspot and another BMW7xxxxx SSID....which I think is the same identifier as the Bluetooth connection.

I only played with it for a few minutes, but it seemed that if connected to the hotspot, there's no CarPlay for me?!

Am I missing something obvious? I hope so, otherwise this is a completely useless feature (I wanted it for streaming podcasts on long journeys and streaming music from Deezer)

Thanks in advance chaps
Spencer

Hmmm....I think I've found the answer to my question - no, can't connect a phone simultaneously with wi-fi hotspot and CarPlay. Bugger.

https://www.slashgear.com/wireless-c...cord-16527444/

I had a little more of a play earlier; the article above confirms what I saw and didn't manage to achieve; some strange device names added (my CarPlay device name is "spenny_b iphone"....my hotspot profile is "spenny-b-iphone", note the hyphens instead of underscore and a space between spenny_b and iphone.)

At this point, the feature has very limited use for me, the only time possibly being where I desperately need to hop online with a laptop whilst on a business trip, and my mobile cell coverage is marginal for pairing to the laptop - I may then have a strong cell signal using the cars hotspot....maybe.....certainly not worth paying £10/20/30 a month on the offchance!

ETA - what I hadn't realised (or rather, forgotten since quickly pairing my phone) is that the CarPlay connection also uses Wi-Fi in addition to Bluetooth. I had assumed it was just a BT connection, the same as my previous non-Carplay car. This is my first outing with CarPlay. Of course, now I know it needs Wi-Fi as well as BT, it's entirely logical that you can't have 2x Wi-Fi connections simultaneously.

Oh well, my daughter can use it with her phone on tomorrows road-trip I guess. #wontbesubscribingafterfreetrial

I just installed kubax86 ’s full screen CarPlay patch and I’m loving it (full screen makes a world of difference). For anyone that’s on the fence, I would highly recommend working with kuba, he was very responsive and helpful throughout the process.

Another satisfied kubax86 customer here. Flashed me up to nbtevoP with full screen car play. Very responsive and patient.

Note: don't try and use a laptop with anti virus AT ALL.
